How about we don't post in any of them and have a poll (time limited to 5 days) to see if we want the one thread or the two threads.

I see advantages and disadvantages to both. In the two threads, you can't really be doing the I've just finished reading such and such and am now reading this and that as you have to go to the other thread to post one of the other.

But with the single thread, you can post whatever it is you want be it reading or read or about what's read or being read. But then the single thread can get to be rather large.

However, I do have an idea that might work in terms of two threads. One thread like the one I started and a second thread for just the list of books read in 2011. So you go back to the list thread and edit your one post to add in what you've finished reading or ar in the process of reading.
Huh?

I still don't have a clue. Are you talking about each person having two threads? Why do I want a separate thread to list my books? Isn't that what exists now in the social group setup?

Why don't we just leave the current social group for listing the damn books and have ONE new meandering thread where, if they feel like it, people can say, Hey this book I just finished was really great/awful, or where people who've skimmed the social group list can ask about a specific book they've noticed there.

It's way too complicated, and is taking away time I could be using to read a book ...

Stay in the group forum where we started
Use one sticky thread
Use two sticky threads
Have a challenge subforum where each person has one thread of their own

And anything else I missed that might have been suggested.
I don't think we can get any kind of consensus any other way.
But what do these different options actually mean? That is what I am not getting.

One sticky - one thread like what we are already doing in the forum, but here there would not be the same limitations (length, quoting, etc)
Two stickys - as above, but one would be as above, the other to discuss books we've finished (I think)
Subforum - a section of the forum for all challenge-related posts. Each member would have their own thread. The first post in each thread would be the list as they progress, and others can post on that thread to discuss the books.

The problem I have with editing your list of books read is that it will not raise your thread up to the top of the list. Only adding a new post will do that.

That is why I suggested that each person have a second thread where he and others can discuss the books he has read - to keep the discussion away from each person's list of books read (to which each person will post a new response each time he has completed a book, rather than editing his original post).

yes, that is why we are going with a "have read" sticky, and a "this is what I am reading" sticky. both of which I would imagine will engender discussions. it would be terribly awkward for each reader to have two stickies

But then how are the lists going to be updated? Wade through a thread for your own spot and edit? Who's going to pay attention to the new edits? Isn't that what we have now? Quoting doesn't mean anything if the new material isn't really findable in the thread.

And is anyone going to read more than a hundred threads?

We do that now, just by reading this site. Choose the reviews that interest you and skip the ones that don't.

I personally really like the Sub-form idea.

JSWolf has made the suggestion HERE in the Feedback area, and I've "voted" for it. I would ask that anyone else who likes the idea please do the same.

I vote for my own idea, largely because it's the only one I understand. Leave the original setup for listing books. Start a new sticky so there can be a discussion of books from the lists whenever someone feels the urge to delve into something specific.

But a label that says "so-and-so's 2011 list" doesn't give me any sense of whether that's a thread I want to participate in. It would all be a crap shoot.

I tallied up the posts in this thread, but posting the numbers might start a battle and we've already gotten crazy with this. I'm just going to use my ticker. I might use Calibre and occasionally output the info into a Google Docs spreadsheet and link to that from wherever this ends up.

Next year maybe we should start the discussion in November.

I think I agree with Catlady. I'm confused. In order to simplify it, why don't we:

1) Have ONE thread to talk about books we have already read. In each comment in which we "report" our book, we can note what we are currently reading or will read next. That way we will get notifications when someone posts, otherwise everyone will get lost. Also, we can use quotes.

2) KEEP the social group we already have and edit our booklist from there. We've already got it started.

The biggest problem with the community group that I see is that there is a limit to the number of characters allowed in a post.

I would like to be able to have a list of my books read, either as one post or as a thread in which only I participate.
