I accept the fact that YOU realize the site is fake, but to tell me that because I have an iPhone i accept that Steve Jobs knows whats best for me is absurd and offensive.
You buy an iPhone because it is best for you. So in this case what is best for you and Jobs' vision match up. That is no "value judgement" on you. The iPhone is, by design, somewhat restricted. If the restrictions are not important for you, great. In case you had really read my previous posts here you would have noticed that I said "many times Apple products work out just fine for users". So you are really barking up the wrong tree. We all have a right to voice our opinions here. Even if you don't agree with what I say.

I'm one of the Apple "haters", but I'm not 100% clear on what you were calling out in the first place.

Some people don't read their sources clearly before they post about them, and I can understand if someone who either has no sense of sarcasm (extremely common where I live) or by other means assumes that a source is legitimate could be confused and possibly a little bit horrified. The poster's mistake was not borne of hatred toward Apple, and it's a plenty common mistake.

I worked for a large software competitor of Apple's and can tell you from my experience this attitude is not far from the bull's eye. While I was there, we invited customers to come and talk to us about their needs for the next version of our software. It was a wonderful three day event that yielded a great amount of requirements. The marketing guy and myself put together a great summary of the event and presented it to the development team. We were promptly told that none of the customer requirements would be worked on because the customers were not smart enough to know what they wanted. The Product Unit Manager was the "wise man" at the top in this case. Sad, but probably more true than not in the software industry.

Maybe not what was meant, but arguably the user doesn't know what they want / need.

The theory behind this is the four stages of knowledge approach (not knowing what you don't know, knowing what you don't know, conscious ability, unconscious ability). According to this theory people who are really good at what they do are, by their nature, not necessarily able to tell you how they do what they do, and thus what would improve on that.

An example of this is driving. If you have been a driver for a long time, do you actually consciously think about changing gear, or does it just happen?

As I say, most likely not what was meant, as people in software development don't seem to get this, and actually think users don't know what they need because they are stupid (users), and that smart developers know better. Which, in my opinion, is how we end up with software that does neither what the user thinks they want, nor what they actually need.

Way off topic. Just had to get that off my chest.

I can't believe you thought this was true.. I guess come people go to the onion website and believe those articles are accurate as well. It even says at the top of the story that it isn't (entirely) true.

Jobs may be many things, but he's not a communist or autocrat, he's just a pushy capitalist.

It isn't a "Steve Jobs attitude" in particular. And it isn't about capitalism either (this is a nice side effect). It's about the concept of control. Shaping the digital world to their liking. Microsoft tries it, Google tries it, Apple tries it. Each in their own fashion.*

As long as there are alternatives I'd say "Let them try. Each man needs a hobby".

* no, I'm not into therapy, and, yes, the doctors say, I'm fine ...

Apple and Steve Jobs have known that DRM doesn't work since before the launch of the iTunes Music Store. They were forced to implement it by the record labels.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...tone_interview

Quote:
When we first went to talk to these record companies — you know, it was a while ago. It took us 18 months. And at first we said: None of this technology that you're talking about's gonna work. We have Ph.D.'s here, that know the stuff cold, and we don't believe it's possible to protect digital content.

I haven't seen any statement yet as to what DRM (if any) is going to be used on ebooks for the iPad. Hopefully he's been more persuasive with the book publishers than he was with the record labels. He does, after all, have the record labels' experience to point to.

But my guess if that Apple will again be forced to implement a DRM scheme. If we're lucky it will go away after five years or so, like the iTunes music DRM scheme did.

================================================== ========

NOTE - THE FOLLOWING IS A "TONGUE IN CHEEK" REPLY TO ANYONE RESPONDING WITH A KNEE JERK REACTION TO MY FIRST POST.

IT IS MENT TO SHOW HOW INTOLERANCE TO THE VIEWPOINT OF OTHERS CAN LEAD TO THE SUPPRESSION OF HONEST DISCOURSE.

I HAVE MADE A MISTAKE IN MY FIRST POSTING, AND THEN APOLOGIZED IN A SUBSEQUENT POST.

IF YOU WISH TO ATTACK MY SANITY OR JUDGEMENT THEN I MUST ASSUME THAT YOU ARE A BETTER PERSON THAN I, AND THAT YOU HAVE NEVER MADE A MISTAKE.

THERE ARE WAYS TO IGNORE THE POSTING OF THOSE WITH WHOM YOU DISAGREE. IF YOU CAN NOT ACCEPT AN APOLOGY PLEASE USE THOSE METHODS.

================================================== =======

The only place where I believe EVERYTHING, is in the Huffington post. EVERYTHING!

Lets look at some of the facts;

1) G W Bush was just a stupid drunk until someone got to him and turned him into an evil genius. ( if you'll just read the H P you'll see that he really is a stupid mastermind)

2) Bill gates was just a nice hippy working out of his garage. Someone got to him too. And now he is going to take over the world, kill all of the linux penguins, and make us all use Internet Explorer! DOWN WITH MICROSOFT!

3) Someone got to Barack Obama and now he is doing some of the same things that G W Bush did!

So why do you think that someone didn't get to Steve Jobs? It could happen!

================================================== ======

Wake up and loosen up. If someone says something against one of YOUR icons it doesn't have to mean war.

To quote one of me favorite philosophers - "People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along? Can we get along?"

This from someone that I had respected?
I don't care what he was talking about, it doesn't matter. I don't want Bush, Obama, or any "leader" taking "a strong-handed approach" and deciding "what’s best for everyone else".
I will never be able to look at an Apple product again. Especially a product where Steve Jobs may decide that the "leader" knows what I should or shouldn't have access to.

You don't care who or what your source was? You don't care what he was talking about? It doesn't matter? You will never be able to look at an Apple product again?
Well.... GOSH HorridRedDog.... I'm suddenly very uneasy about you!

I just can't believe all the hatred towards Apple and Steve Jobs on the internet! Why don't you all just go and buy a Kindle or whatever and leave the iPad to the people who appreciate it. I'm bored to death with every hill-billy Dick, Tom and his uncle, suddenly knowing that Apple deliberately designed this supremely inferior product just to piss them off!

P.S. Where is the DISLIKE/UNHELPFUL button??

At the top of each thread's page, on the second-from-top blue menu bar, under "Thread tools", there is the option to "Ignore this thread", in which case it won't show in the New Posts section or when browsing the forum sections.

If you click on someone's username on the left, pick "View Public Profile", click the "User lists" menu under their username there (to the right of the "Send message" menu), you can pick "Add to Ignore List", which will then not show the content of that user's posts (you can also do this by going to your own "User Control Panel" and picking "Edit Ignored Users").

Cheers,
Marc

HorridRedDog, I've edited your first post to add a disclaimer that the linked article is a parody and that you are now aware of this. You may further edit your own post if you choose to.

I'd also like to remind everyone that sarcasm, while a valid form of humor, often doesn't translate well across languages or even cultures. Let's try to give other members at MR the benefit of the doubt when we read posts, and make our first interpretation based on best-case, rather than worst-case, shall we?
