I have a few papers that I cannot read on my DR1000 without zooming and panning. It should be clear that as soon as that is necessary, something like the iPad will be vastly superior, given how painfully slow e-ink is. On the other hand, for the majority of papers that I read, zooming and panning is not necessary, and for those, e-ink will be easier on the eyes, plus I can annotate of course. The bottom line is that what is best will depend on what you read and how you read it. There is no one solution that is best for everybody and all uses.
