If there is no DRM then Calibre is where you want to go. It handles epub, lrf, html, lit, mobi, prc, azw, txt, rtf, pdf, and comic forms, and will convert any of those to one usable on the PRS-XXX.

Anyone mention Calibre yet?

Now what I can't understand is why no one told me about Calibre (he he he). Calibre it is then, and thanks everyone.
I'm far clearer on the issue of formats, what I need, what the Reader can handle and what software to use, and how. All that in a couple of hours. Thanks very much.
Now to buy the Reader and...... get reading.

Skip the Sony software unless you want to use their store. Calibre is the way to go.

Thanks, Pangolin! I'm glad it worked for you.

The lrf format is for the Sony. It can be dragged and dropped into the Sony, put on through Calibre, and put on the Reader through the Sony library.

Have you checked all the free ebooks right here on MR? So many of those PD (and some CC) books are here and have been beautifully formatted for our Readers by some dedicated MR members.

For example....(4 novels and 56 short stories) in one download

HarryT's (MR member) Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur: Complete Sherlock Holmes (Omnibus) lrf version

and the ePub version of Harry T's Omnibus uploaded by (MR member) mtravellerh

Sometimes I have to use 'open' rather than save the file, then ADE automatically opens and imports.

Thanks everyone, K8E, yes, 'open' worked for me. i'd loaded texts into the Adobe library once I'd figured it could recognise epub only to find that the 44 titles wouldn't open and came up at missing - I'm sure you know the feeling, couple of hours or research, 3.30 am and a feeling of bulldog with bone,' I will make this work, I will make this work....' Had to delete the lot manually and re introduce them by using 'open' on the texts, out of Finder. Hmmmm

Dreams, I'm delighted to find the listings here, people are so generous with their time. I'm very grateful and PayPal when I can. The Conan Doyle is right up my street so thanks for that : )

Since I don't intend to buy from the Sony store, couldn't even if I wanted, then I will skip their software, thanks a lot for confirming that is an option. one always has the tendency to shove cds or head off to down load if the product support guides tell you to. So thanks for the advice which I'll follow.

I've gone ahead and ordered and am now holed up in front of the fire while it snows outside, cocker spaniel at my feet while I take on the serious work of case choosing : ) what fun!!

By the way, ff thread so no probs of no one answers - classic problem, I'm an insomniac and my partner is disturbed by reading lights, would the light wedge work on the 600's touch screen? sorry to be so full of endless, unrelated questions!!!
