I have a Kindle 1 and there is nothing about it i hate.
It would be nice if... Kindle books could be read on other devices. Either support other DRM/formats or go drm free. That is more a dislike of the Kindle store than the device. A firmware update to allow us to adjust the line spacing like you can on the K2. I will say folders would be nice, but frankly I don't keep a lot of books on my device. I'm sure if I had folders and I could manage books in situ I would use them... but I don't think I would gain anything. BOb |

Two things I hate about the Kindle
This is really hard to say because overall, I LOVE my Kindle. I don't expect this device to be all things, it does exactly what it was sold to do, a device to read on. Even with the Nook out there and other e-readers on the horizon, I still love my Kindle. Having said that, there are two things that I don't like and here they are (I am sure this is no surprise to anyone):
1. Lack of content management. If we got folders so I could organize the over 500 books on my Kindle, beyond the title, author or most recent sort, I would be in heaven. This appeals to my OCD nature. Sorry even my DTB books were organized like they are in a bookstore or the library. It just makes things easier to find. 2. Expandable SD slot. This was a feature on K1, not a big deal, but would be a nice to have. #1 is the primary thing I hate about my Kindle. In the grand scheme of things, it is small, but just something that would (IMHO) move the Kindle from good to great! ![]() |

Nothing. My kindle 1 is 100% fine for leisure novel reading--which is why I bought it.
Folders to organize books would be nice, but no biggie for me. |

I am happy with my purchase. The only thing I am unhappy with is the lack of folders. But it doesn't rise to hate. I have 54 pages of books, romance, politics, mystery, nonfiction, horror, etc. I don't know which author is which genre, so sorting by author doesn't help. I can usually pick out the romances by title, but not always.
Help! I'm drowning in a sea of books! |

I usually leave my Kindle sorted by most recent (sounds like this is what you're using), but sorting by title or author can be useful when I'm looking for something in particular. If you have your titles sorted in one of the alphabetical lists (author/title) you can go directly to a specific letter of the alphabet using the keyboard. HTH, Tracey |

You can see some examples on the Mobi2Mobi_Advanced wiki page (just ideas, people have different ways that work best for them). You can use Mobi2Mobi, Calibre or MobiPocket Creator (on non-DRMed books) to change the metadata. |

In general I'm quite happy about my DX, in fact I just got finished showing it to a coworker. I love my Kindle and it's the second best tech I've ever bought (after iPhone).
That being said.. there are features that piss me off - folders, for one. yes, if I want to find a PARTICULAR book I can find it quickly but folders allow one to 'browse' easily. I may just want to look through my 'shelf' of scifi or literary fiction and decide what to read. It'd be nice if it had wifi... but not a huge deal. I find the keyboard on the DX is so bad that it pretty much makes the annotation feature useless. I don't even like SEARCHING with it it's so cumbersome. PDF's not having bookmarks is absolutely obscene. Renders some PDF's I have almost useless. But on the whole I love it. I'd like it more if the books were all without DRM and perhaps in ePUB and I'd love to see more accountability for quality controls in particular texts but that's about it. |

I find my Kindle has improved my reading and I'm glad I bought it. There are some things I would change, of course. Many of the things have been mentioned like folders/tags, ePub & PDF support. Also, the clickety wheel + keyboard interface is a bit clumsy in my opinion. The little nobbly thing doesn't look much better. I'd prefer a touchscreen to the keyboard. I'd take the Wacom pen style used in the iRex rather than the type Sony currently uses for now, though. I wouldn't want to give up any screen quality. I'd like to be able to annotate with the pen and have that saved with my document. There are some other features I'd add like the ability to select a group of words as a search term for the Web or Wikipedia, multiple dictionary support like the Cybook, and the ability to flag errors in a book and have it sent back to the publishers.
My other gripes are more about how the Amazon system works than the Kindle as a device. I'd rather get rid of all DRM but I'm sure that won't happen for awhile. Ideally, we'd buy the hardware we like and would be able to buy our books from any store we like. I'll keep dreaming. In the meantime, I don't think the maximum of six licenses is fair. If they're going to encourage you to read the same book on multiple devices at the same time, then it seems absurd to only give you six licenses. If my husband and I loaded the same book on our Kindles, our phones and one computer each, that would be it. If I want to read it five years from now on my Kindle 8, I'll be out of luck unless I strip the DRM. I'm comfortable doing that but I bet the average customer would not be. Sure, they free up licenses if you ask but it takes a support contact. That seems needlessly frustrating as well as cost inefficient. I should be able to read my books on all my registered devices now and five years from now. If they're concerned about you giving away copies of your books by registering your friend's Kindle, loading books, and deregistering, then they can just flag people who keep doing that. Send them a warning if they continue. In the long run I don't think it makes a difference. People bent on sharing files will do so even if Amazon tries to make it inconvenient. They'd stand more chance of controlling it with a fair lending system than an overly restrictive limit on licenses. |
