What's the name of your book? I'll download it from B&N and see if they've added DRM. Their ePUB don't have DRM, but from my experience the eReader format does.

Thanks.

So the good news for the author it's not due to Geo restrictions, it just won't download for anybody

This message is on the listing of my book: "These items ship to U.S. addresses only." The same message appears on other books as well. I went all the way through the signing up process, even giving my credit card information (although why they would want that for a free book is anyone's guess), and I got a similar message.

This is quite apart from the "technical difficulties' they're having at the moment.

(shrugs) It doesn't matter. Having the book listed at B&N is just a little bit of icing on the cake. Between Feedbooks and Smashwords, it has already had more than 11,000 downloads.

Thanks, everyone, for trying to download it from B&N. I appreciate it.

I too am unable to download your book from B&N.

The reason B&N need your credit card number is that this is eReader format and if it has DRM, the CC # and your name are used to encrypt the book.

The eReader DRM uses your credit card number as the passcode. I'm not sure if this necessarily means your book has DRM though. They probably do this on all the accounts so you're able to download eReader DRM eBooks.

[Edit] Ooops. Sorry JSWolf. Didn't see your post with the same info.

This is interesting, what has been the publisher response to your grievances? Perhaps B&N have some kind of default license with the publisher and globally apply it, they don't have nuanced control over the license types on their website?

I think harassing the publisher and getting them to harass B&N might get it resolved eventually. If you have 11k downloads now, if it is international on B&N as well you could hit 20k Congrats by the way.

On a related note: I only just discovered that my first two Denial of Service short stories are "available" on the B&N store. I put that in parens, because when I tried to download them, I got the same "technical difficulties" message. Also, the covers for the books do not display on the B&N store (and there's certainly nothing about the art content to hide them).

It may be an issue between B&N and Smashwords, and how the books are being accessed/uploaded. I'll see what I can find out.

Edit: I've looked a little further. I see The Onuissance Cells is in the B&N store, and it does have a cover. However, I just noticed the site gives absolutely no description for the e-books... any of mine, and including Black Silk. Pretty pointless to have books with no covers, no descriptions, that you can't download, huh?

Ah, just goes to show that you don't understand the principles of Marketing. This stratagem allows B&N to announce that there are 500,000 free books on their website.

I emailed Mark Coker from Smashwords about this and he replied saying it's a problem with B&N, because they just started getting the Smashwords feed. He also said that Smashwords has worldwide rights to their ebooks so B&N should not restrict availability by region, basically verifying what everyone else has been saying on this thread.

Hopefully B&N will be able to figure this out soon.

Not that that helps when people see so many coverless, descriptionless books in there, and say "WTF!?! I'm going back to Amazon!"

Update: Still no change in missing covers or descriptions. I'd also e-mail Mark C, who said he was looking into it, last week.

Now my book has disappeared from B&N. I guess they got peeved at me ! I suppose there might be a legitimate reason. I checked other Smashwords books, and all those that I checked are still up and still don't have descriptions.
