Which is why I keep repeating in a different context in other threads that there are legitimate reasons to own (and want to use) a blacklisted Kindle.

Probably loads of reasons. Also if someone is under warranty Amazon may not bother asking for the old one back. They'll "blacklist"/block it. Then later the owner discovers it wasn't broken...

Or they send two by mistake, or because one is delayed (but it turns up later). They may tell you to keep it. They have done that with 42" TV sets! You then own it, but of course Amazon "blacklists" (blocks) it.

One ebay seller I saw has loads of Kindles and advertises them as blocked/"blacklisted".

Kid's mode seems worse as you can put DRM-free or PD ebooks on a blocked Kindle via USB, but when I tried Kid's mode it "hid" all the "sideloaded" ebooks. Stupid. There are literally 1000s of great PD texts that kids can enjoy.

That's so obviously nonsense. Or gross incompetence.

mmm.. a few of years ago I sent a kindle through Royal Mail to a friend who wanted to try one. Before sending it in, I contacted Amazon and asked them to blacklisted as it could potentially get lost, the agent said he would add a note so the next agent would remove it from the blacklist when I contacted them again once my friend had gotten it. That was during covid-ish times so it took a while for him to get it, but they removed the blacklisted status no problem when I eventually asked them to.
