Thanks for all your help everyone, I've run the check library and have included the screenshot. It does show problems. I also checked books that are not showing in the library and they appear to have 2 separate folders, one without metadata and one with it. Those books that are in the library only have the one folder which does contain the metadata.

It was shortly after Microsoft set that folder to be autosynched to OneDrive that Kovid changed the default library location on first install, I think to the user's home directory. There may have been something in the release notes suggesting what existing users could do - disable OneDrive, exclude Documents or Calibre Library from OneDrive synching, or move Calibre Library out of Documents. That's strange. Something obviously had to cause the mess. Are you sure you've never had the documents folder syncing to OneDrive, not even in the beginning?

Well this is not good news, I've run the restore and unfortunately it didn't take very long, it only loaded the same number of books as before, so still only the 700 odd, not the 4500+ that I have in the database. I'm going to see if I can use a backup, I'll let you all know how it goes.

Go into Settings, that's WindowsKey+I and you should see something like this: Click OneDrive Manage and you should see something like this: If Documents is in the list then it's probably being synched to OneDrive, a green tick in a green circle means the folder is available locally and it's being synched to OneDrive. So why is this a problem? See ==>> I am getting errors with my calibre library on a networked drive/NAS? Quote:
If you hover on a Status icon you'll get a brief note, here's the long form ==>> What do the OneDrive icons mean? Before doing anything I suggest you move the Calibre Library folder out of Documents to your user folder. BR |

I've moved the Calibre file out of documents and into user as requested.
I have tried opening books from with in the Calibre database asking it to use the Calibre program to open and it then puts them into the library, maybe I can add books from the copy I've taken on a usb? |

Well I can't explain what happened but I have got the library back again, see the screenshot to show the number of books. I have used the add books feature and added them from a copy I had made of the database on a usb, it's worked, but I don't know why they were removed. Could it have been due to a plugin update perhaps?
I definitely have the file locally, not using any cloud drive Thank you for all your advice and help, very much appreciated |

A Windows Update, in 2018 I think, enabled storing Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos on OneDrive without so much as by-your-leave sir/madam. Synching Calibre libraries to a cloud services while calibre itself is running has caused the sort of issues you have experienced for many users. It's happened on DropBox, GoogleDrive, iCloud, Box, OneDrive and others. One of the responders to this thread, chaley, who is one of the calibre developers, experienced it first hand. Glad you got your library back? Have you run Check library on it? BR |

Thanks BR, I definitely didn't have any OneDrive or other network cloud thing going on, I did check where you said, and no backing up to any of them. I do save a couple of documents there but not calibre at all. I remember that Windows update, I had to disable the backup from using it back then too, very annoying.
I've run the check library again, the initial check says it's all ok and then I do the further check and it does have some items with the black arrow, they are extra titles, invalid authors, and extra authors Do I need to run the fix for these ? |

The fastest way to check what may be going on is to look at the library's directory structure and see if any of the missing author's are there. If they are and the eBooks are in the directories, then go ahead and rebuild the library database.

Louby, please attach the images and not a word document with the images. This would make it much easier to see then having to load Word to see your screen grabs.

I posted a problem I'm having here yesterday and it's been deleted for some reason. Why is that?
