I use native epubs, with no conversion. One thing I have noticed is that MapleRead sometimes screws up the rendering when you rotate the IPad and switch between portrait and landscape. |

You're welcome on the book views. Tried them all and decided I like the Classic Book the best. |

That scrambled book looks fine in both Calibre's viewer and on my Kobo Forma.
In the Calibre editor, everything looks ok to me (I only dabble). There's nothing odd going on with the classes/styles in there that I can see and they look fairly simple. Again, I'd guess it's some kind of odd issue with MapleRead. JSWolf's suggestion of something to do with the left margin in the viewer sounds good. But, why it would show up only occasionally, I don't know. EDIT: Let me qualify the above. In the editor, by "ok," I mean that I don't see anything obvious that would shift your pages like you're seeing. But, there are some issue with the files. Running "Check Books" in the editor give a lot of invalid ids. But, I run across that a lot. The more problematic stuff is from running the epubCheck plugin. There are quite a few things in there that it doesn't like, but I'd guess most of them are caused by the same things: - classes in the <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" class="calibre"> line near the top of each file - <b> types of things outside of paragraphs or divisions. Even though it looks trivial, probably the most troublesome thing is that whoever formatted this, wrapped most of the body of the text in <b> </b> elements: <b> <p>... <p>... ... </b> My understanding is that those bold elements need to be inside containers, or preferably in the classes/styles (add "font-weight: bold;" to all appropriate classes on the stylesheet). Maybe that has something to do with the issue. But if so, it's not obvious to me. Last edited by enuddleyarbl; 07-10-2022 at 10:20 PM. |

Dave, since the ePub is conversion from Kindle book, could some or most of those errors be related to stuff that was in the Kindle book but is not needed in an ePub book? Oh, I'm restricted to Calibre 3.48 do to my iMac being maxed out at MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra.

The epub had some issues with some renderers. I went through and did a quick cleanup including removing those naked <b> and <a> tags and doing a quick basic cleanup on the CSS. This cleared up the issues I saw.
I've attached the modified file to this message and would be interested in seeing if it still exhibits the issue you were seeing. |

Basically, I just wanted you to view the epub to see if it still exhibited the problem. There is no way to unscramble it.

Because this is a Kindle Unlimited eBook, I was able to get a copy. After looking at this, it's clear the author has no idea how to create an eBook. He used some sort of word processor, took that output, and converted it with Calibre and did zero error checking. Amazon is also to blame for not having any sort of error checking to self-published eBooks. Even for free, I would not want to have to clean up the error riddled code.
The author has a Facebook page. I suggest you contact him and let him know that his eBooks are riddled with errors. https://www.facebook.com/DuaneBoehmAuthor Last edited by JSWolf; 07-11-2022 at 06:22 AM. |

Well, he responded with this information:
"Amazon used to request I upload the .mobi file, but now they want .epub. I think they then still convert it to .mobi. I suspect you going back to .epub is one conversion too many somehow." He sent me the ePub version of his books that had the problem so I deleted the versions in MapleRead SE and loaded the new ones. All three books are fine. Thus the problem is apparently Amazon. Now if only Amazon would let the buyer choose ePub or Mobi when they buy a book; better yet get rid of Mobi altogether and just use ePub for Kindle books. |

Unfortunately, I can't as I'm limited to Calibre 3.48 since my iMac is limited to MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra. When I tried to install the plug-in, I was told a Calibre upgrade was required.
