Maybe your Kobo always worked this way, but others did not.

Some of mine do, some don't. It depends on the firmware.

Maybe it should just say 'Charging' with no percentage displayed at all.

Yes, that makes sense.

No biggie, thanks to everyone for all for your input.
Phones have several times larger batteries. They are doing a lot more even during sleep so the amount of energy expended to update battery status is pretty small compared to all the other things they are doing, so it's worth doing since phones spend a lot more time charging and the users expect to know how long it's going to take

Android phones and Tablets don't really sleep in the same sense as Kobo, Kindle, Sony, Nook etc eink ereaders. The Android based eink tablets are using a very custom Android that nearly sleeps and it's much higher power consumption than custom Linux Kindle, Kobo or pre-T1 Sony. The Mars Android eInk goes flat quite fast when asleep. It needs powered off if not in use.

I have to remember to turn off WiFi on my tablet or a notification can wake it.
The phone Mobile interface is alive and wakes the phone if there is a call or SMS.

If the Pixel 6 shows ANYTHING, it's not asleep. I think by default Android just pauses foreground processes and blanks the screen, it's not a real "sleep".
