Who knows. I have no idea how Amazon made the PW4 screen, but it's a myth that recessed screens are always better than flush screens. There have been flush readers with excellent screens (Voyage, Sage) and recessed ones with less than average screens (2014 Kindle Basic, Libra H2O).

If you think the flush screen is the one and only reason PW4 is worse than PW3, please explain how the flush Voyage could have one of the best eink screens in existence and how the flush Sage could be practically as good as the Libra 2.

Please explain why the Sage screen is virtually the same as the Libra 2 screen if you’re correct.

Note I’ve held both side by side with the same text and images on them. The Libra 2 is not significantly better.

The Voyage used glass. The PW3/4 do not. So that's why the Voyage worked so well.

They should, since they do sync in to the iOS app, I'd expect them to be treated as a Kobo bought ebook. Reason being they are in fact provided from the Kobo store just as a temporary loan.

As to how well they sync someone else will have to answer for sure, but I'd imagine just as well as any other ereader syncs positioning, obvious disclaimer that you'd need wifi or signal to sync positioning the weaker those are the higher the chance for a sync not to happen properly. Which is really the same with any syncing.

Don't the PW3 and PW4 have the same e-ink display? The only difference between the two is flush vs recessed, which causes the difference.

The Voyage was great because the e-ink display it used was one of the best ever, plus the glass over it was micro-etched. The micro-etching made the glass on the Voyage even better than the glass on the Oasis. Apparently Amazon skimped out on the micro-etching process for the Oasis because it was too expensive.

The Aura H2O (gen 1) had the same generation of display as the Voyage, and remains the best display seen on a Kobo as well. The Voyage appeared slightly better than it despite the extra layer, because it was 300 ppi compared to the Aura's 264 ppi.

Another reason why screens can appear different is the material of the top layer (glass vs plastic). Unless I am mistaken, the PW4 and Oasis 3 have the same generation of e-ink display, but the difference is that the Oasis had glass on top and the PW4 had plastic on top. So the Oasis looked better.

In general, if two devices have the exact same e-ink display underneath, then the recessed one with no extra layers will read better than the one with an extra layer on top. If the extra layer is glass, it will be slightly worse. And if the extra layer is plastic, it will be much worse.

It is not significantly better, but it is slightly better, is it not? Jon is correct. Extra layers make a difference. To most people it does not matter, but to the obsessives among us the difference does exist.

Jon’s stance isn’t that it would be slightly better rather that it must be significantly better. And I can tell you that without doing a side by side comparison you won’t know the difference. Even in a side by side they’re neck and neck.

You’ve stated multiple times that this is solely to do with flush vs recessed and that flush was inherently worse than recessed. Despite evidence to the contrary.

There are any number of reasons the PW4 isn’t as clear as the PW3.

I understand. And I do love me some buttons. But an Oasis with 32GB and no ads runs $300. A Paperwhite Signature with 32GB and no ads is $190. That is just too large a discrepancy for buttons*

Except dude's been craving the Oasis for an extended time and bought some less satisfactory replacements. At that point, just get what you want. eReaders last so long, if you are an active reader, it's worth splurging and getting what you really want.

*Of course, I'd just buy the Libra 2 for $180 to get 32GB, no ads and buttons. But that is not much help in a Kindle forum.

So you agree that the screen position is not the only reason for screen differences, and often not even the main reason. There are others - glass vs plastic, lighting, probably other factors most of us may not even be aware of. It's not merely flush vs recessed.
