Stolen or lost. Then the owner calls Amazon and reports the Kindle missing so it cannot be used with the owners account.

The procedure is on Amazon's site under Report Your Amazon Device as Lost or Stolen.

Basically, go to Contents and Devices, select the stolen device, click on the device name and record it's serial number and deregister it. Contact Amazon Customer Service, report the device as stolen with the serial number.

While this does not stop someone from using the device without registering it, it does keep them from registering it or using it to purchase books on your nickel.

And yes, one friend of mine was looking for a Kindle to use for it's serial number. He went through 4 devices before he found one that could be registered. The other three had to be returned and that turned into a total PITA for him.

I must have been really lucky. A few years ago, just after the PW4 was released, I needed a new device as my PW2 was nearly full. Prefering the PW3 to the PW4 I went looking for secondhand models on ebay.

I was aware of the blacklisting issue, but came across a seller who accepted returns within 30 days, so I bought one. There was nothing wrong with it. It registered with Amazon (using a friend's wifi) and had no issues. But I realise that I was lucky.
The battery is showing signs of wear now. Probably an issue with secondhand devices.

If the registered owner reports it to Amazon as lost or stolen it will be blacklisted and unable to be registered.

Edit: Should have gone to page 2.
