Oh, right. I had no idea of this difference with the older kindle. Thanks!!

Yep, I will install the pc version of Kindle and use that instead. I assume the books are fairly easy to locate once downloaded? probably in %appdata% at a guess.
I've never tried using the Kindle for PC app, but I know that I've seen multiple threads here, which I haven't read entirely, but my memory is that it can be difficult going that route and using the DeDRM plugin.

What I do is buy the book on Amazon, then go to their web page and click on "Hello Hobnail, Account & Lists" (top right) then click on Content & Devices, and then for each book click More Actions and select Download and transfer via USB. Depending on what the author uploaded it downloads either an AZW3 or a MOBI (container). Which I then drag into calibre and the plugin removes the DRM.

I suspect that if you select an ancient Kindle as the target, like the OP's Kindle 2, you'll always get MOBI. The OP wants to avoid that.

Ah, ok; thanks. Hopefully the Kindle PC route will work for him.

Basically, you can either use an earlier version of K4PC or you use a batch file to launch K4PC which disables downloading KFX files. If you check in the stickied Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre and look around message #1265, you'll find a copy of that batch file.

On my system, that batch file has been tested to work with K4PC up to v1.33.0.

@DNSB @hobnail

Well, I rushed off and downloaded and installed Kindle for PC v1.33.0, registered, downloaded my first book and bam, it wouldn't convert.

Then a bit of searching led me here... https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/issues
Which pointed me back to here... https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=283371

And I was just slowly making my way through that thread, but @DNSB pointed me to the batch file and it now works perfectly.

Yep, seen those. Even saw a book that used instead of

Epub is the one I use as my main copy, since it's editable.
