Some steps are missing:
1) Did you buy or borrow the book?
2) Vendor should be informed, that die DRM they are using is not working as expected.
3) Which hard-DRM is it (Adobe vs. CARE f.i.)?

Adobe has two versions of DRM for ePub. One is the original DRM that can be broken and the other is the hard DRM that cannot be broken.

If you have ADE 2.0.1 on your computer and that's how you downloaded the ePub, then the DRM can be removed with Calibre and DeDRM.

Directly from the Kobo bookstore through the download link in my account. I then used the Adobe software on my Pocketbook to unlock the DRM as I use Linux for my main computer OS and Adobe has not yet released a Digital Editions version for Linux.

I don't believe I have bought any other EPUB 3 books after my mishap with the book in question. I could possibly find another dirt cheap EPUB 3 book and buy it to try on my device and see if it works? Only if I did that and it ended up working I would face the nightmare of in the future not even knowing if a book I wanted to buy would work on the ereader. A roll of the dice if you will (I wouldn't even buy it if that was the case) unless the full culprit of the problem could be found and solved.

There must be a problem either with the files that I'm getting from Kobo or the onboard ADE software.

If it was the onboard RMSDK we would have had morereports from other Pocketbook users. It could be something with the eBook maybe.

What eBook is this that you are having trouble with?

You may be able to install ADE 2.0.1 under Linux. Here are the directions.

The name of the ebook in question is:
"In Search of the Paranormal"
by Richard Estep

Bought through the Kobo online bookstore. Other Pocketbook users should stay away from buying this title.

When I first bought the book and ran into the problems Kobo support checked the DRM integrity for me and they said it was fine and even after they reset it to try and fix the issue the book would still crash my Pocketbook after unlocking the DRM link. I've given up that particular title as a lost cause at this point.

Thanks for the tip on a ADE WINE workaround but the fact is that I have already tried these steps and many others to attempt and get it to work on my Linux. My computer is old and I have had many problems getting other programs to work with WINE as well so its no big deal.

Problem Solved Enough

Hey Everyone I think I may have semi-solved the problem.

I went with my original laid-out plan and bought a cheap $3 ebook from Kobo that was the same as the problem ebook in terms of DRM protection, EPUB 3 with Adobe DRM enabled. I also bought a $1 EPUB 3 DRM-free ebook to further solidify JSWolf's test results from earlier involving EPUB 3 without DRM. The DRM-free EPUB 3 ebook was already unlocked when I downloaded it so I was able to read it fine with no issues.

I unlocked the DRM protected EPUB 3 ebook with my Pocketbook. I opened it and I was expecting a crash but instead the thing opened fine and I was able to navigate the pages with no issues and no system crash.

I believe the problem probably originates with the mentioned book that I first encountered this issue and the DRM file that goes with it not EPUB 3 DRM-protected books in general. I'll message Kobo about the issue but I don't know if they'll even care to fix it until more people start complaining which may never happen.

In the meantime I'll probably switch to another ebook site to buy EPUB 3 DRM protected books from rather then going through a possible crap shoot with Kobo going forward.

Thank you everyone for sticking to it with me as we narrowed down solutions it was very helpful. I've never received this level of help on any forum I have ever been a member of in my life.

Thank you again.
