I think it's different at each parish and I seem to recall in ours it's being changed to around eight or nine at night(don't trust me, though, I'm hopeless trying to remember timetables). Since we don't usually start dinner until after ten, it's no so bad.The reason given I seem to remember was to make it easier on the families to be together at home or something like that.

According to a radio programme yesterday, they use cobwebs as Christmas decorations in the Ukraine.
If I lived there, every day would be Christmas Day! ![]() |

Christmas Crackers
Some time back, Zelda was asking about Christmas Crackers, following a discussion that started here. These are common in the UK (and a few parts of the world with significant UK influence). They are common at meals, including lunch on Christmas day. The consist of what looks like the center cardboard tube from a toilet roll, covered with shiny paper and two ends or twists (sort of like a couple more toilet roll tubes). (In fact, as children, we would sometimes make them at school from toilet roll tubes.) One person would grab each and and pull them apart. In some, there is a something that is supposed to make a bang or crack when they are pulled apart. The "winner" is the person who gets the central tube into which are placed little trinkets. Typically this includes a cheap plastic toy (though "expensive" models exist...), a silly paper hat. There is also a "joke". At this point, it is important to realise that the "joke" in a cracker is to funny, what water is to a Zany Carter hangover. The winner usually puts on silly paper hat (if they are lucky, breaking it in the process) and reads out the joke. A couple of examples:
What bow can't be untied? A rainbow. What's a frog's favourite drink? Croak-a-cola. I suspect, for reasons best known to herself, Zelda would appreciate it if people posted more of these "jokes". Despite what Wikipedia says, I suspect that the reason for their existance has something to do with a slight masochistic streak the English seem to have. |

particularly since i got a bag of the french equivalent (papillote chocolates : wrapped in shiny foil with an extra slip of paper inside with a terrible joke in french on it. no hat or toy, and no noise though.). i was deeply disappointed to discover that instead of jokes most of them had thoroughly uninteresting trivia questions on them. one or two had jokes, but they were even worse than the usual ones. *sigh* and the absolute worst was that there was only a total of about 3 different ones that were repeated over and over. here's an example : "il faut toujours prendre un petit inca pour la route" (you should always take a little inca for the road), with a picture of a guy wearing hiking shoes and a large backpack and what looks like a monkey with an inca headdress scampering in front of him. it's a pun, because "inca" sounds not actually all that much like "en-cas" which means snack. *sigh* in other news, did you know why zebras are striped ? to recognize each other, and hide from predators. *huge sigh* totally unworthy of christmas chocolates. |

What do vegetarian cannibals eat?
Swedes ![]() ('Human beans' is another hilarious answer; as is 'okra' because it is both witty and cryptic.) |

![]() So here comes a couple of other: What did the digital watch say to the analogue watch? Look! No hands! When's a door not a door? When it's a jar. Why would you invite a mushroom to a Christmas party? He's a fun guy to be with What's big, grey and wears glass slippers? Cinderelephant. What disease can you catch from putting up too many Christmas decorations? Tinsilitis. |

Mince Pies
One part of the Christmas celebrations in the UK are mince pies. Now these pies do not contain mince, but mincemeat (which has no meat in it, though some do contain suet) which contains dried fruits and spices and all sorts of tasty things.
Typically one or two would be left out for Father Christmas/Santa Claus, together with some carrots for Rudolf (and friends). |

Brussels sprout
Possibly only rivalled by Marmite in the deliciousness stakes - brussels sprouts are an essential part of every Christmas dinner in the UK.
It is the traditional symbol of our attachment to the European Union, and represents the presence of our fellow Europeans on this festive occasion. (We also remember our US cousins after the meal when an assortment of nuts is passed around the table. ![]() |
