Hey hey, back up a minute.

I started the whole rant about early holiday decorations, but I am only against the commercialism. I wholeheartedly believe in celebrating my Savior.

Yeah. We Bhuddists got no argument with that. We just want to make the National Greed Month be about something that is honest and leave the celebration of the birth of Christ to the Christians as a nice religious holiday.

And make it more convenient to drive to the grandkids' houses to drop the NGM presents.

And I'm all in favor of your right to do so, and I wish you joy in this season (and all others). What we're all against the corruption of the holiday into an excuse for crass commercialism, it seems.

This is my opinion (to which I'm entitled) and will probably offend several people but IMO Christmas is really a pagan holiday that the Christians "stole" in order to promote Christianity among those same pagans. There is no Biblical reference to a "Christmas Tree" but the Germanic pagans did decorate a fir tree (which was readily available to them) when they celebrated the winter soltice. They also had a Santa Clause-like character in their celebration. In addition during thos winter months, when they were mostly restricted to indoors activities, they made things for each other to give as gifts during that celebration.

So IMO the current holiday called Christmas, should be a pagan - not a Christian - religious holiday and gifts given should come from our own creativity.

OK, that's my rant for the season.

Being a Christian and having studied chuch history (for fun) I know you are correct, the concept and gift giving is pagan, but the celebration is christian but should really be celebrated Jan 6th the real assumed date of Christ's birth. There are also other aspects of the religeon which were added around 400 AD to satistfy eastern orthodox side.

Here it sounds as though war has broken out. And there's a strong smell of cordite in the air.
I thought that there would be fewer fireworks in a recession. But it seems as though people still have money to burn (almost literally).

It's the night when one commemorates the fact that the Gunpowder Plot was frustrated. This was a Catholic plot to blow up parliament. The participants were executed and are now burnt in effigy and fireworks celebrate the occasion.

Actually, most people have forgotten what it's about, but just like fires and fireworks.

After reading the wikis, I see that another name is Cracker Night. That reminds me of another British puzzler. Can you explain?

Last Christmas, one of the docs I work for gave me a box of "crackers" that he brought back from England. It had the legend on the back of the box that it was supposed to simulate the crackling of wood on a fire, but the crackle wasn't very loud and the charms were toy soldiers and things that looked British-ish, but we just didn't get it.

The legend also said it is a beloved holiday tradition. Really?

Yes, we have a box of crackers every Christmas, and the family pull them, extract the gift, and read out the appalling jokes that the crackers contain.
