Yeah, most Chromebooks (like the one I'm posting from right now) have Linux built in. Calibre should install.

Elektron, if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll try to figure out installing koreader package through chromebook and ignore calibre altogether..... I didn't know koreader uses a normal file/folder system unlike the kobo menu - that solves my main gripe with kobo. And koreader also crops margins in pdf files and the screen stretch page positioning stays in place with page turns (if I understand correctly) again unlike the method in the kobo reader which keeps repositioning.

Really? Them they've changed since I've owned one. Though Chrome OS is built on Linux, mine did not include general Linux OS functionality. What model are you using?

You do not need calibre is you decide to only use koreader. But you will need to install koreader, and then access it and create folders, and copy over your books. Your best bet might be an Android app, if your chromebook can run them (I know many can). But it could be fiddly. I suggest you ask in the koreader forum. They might know how to do it. But personally I found Chromebooks to be very difficult to use if I tried to make it do anything beyond its intended features (i.e from inside a broswer). And you don't seem to be very technical.

It looks like you *might* be able to simply drag files from your chromebook to your kobo. But I don't know about installing koreader, or creating folders.

@P - haha, I don't have the patience for technical issues since I got old, haa. I used to be, built all my own computers, etc... Not now. Just give me something that works and I tap a button - good to go.

Yes, pretty much all modern chromies are coming out with at least android support. Some have Linux built in now too, like my HP 14a. The particular model I have (there's a bunch under 14a) took almost a year for an obscure shop to have stock of it. Even HP site no longer lists it, but supports it. IT's a 14" Touchscreen, with android and linux, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd, backlit high travel white keys against a soft grey board, white exterior shell.

I hear you can install koreader from chromebook, you just do it manually.... just have a bit of search & reading to do later.

Chromebooks *are* Linux-based. They're already running a full Linux kernel, and on some, if you type CTRL+ALT+T and type "shell" you'll be able to gain access to a full Bash shell.
Most of them are very closed and difficult to "jailbreak", though.

I think you can jailbreak it by enabling "Developer mode"

Not news to me about being Linux-based
Yeah, my Chromebook is controlled by my admin. So no bash shells; I actually tried just now...

Developer mode is also blocked (understandable).

Very cool. I did not know it was that easy to boot into Linux. My chromie has been sitting there since I bought it, just haven't gotten to it. So, if I want I can actually have a full word processor on the chromie.

You can also install Crouton, that allows you to have a complete proper DE right on your Chromebook: https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton

If your chromebook does support full Linux, you may as well install calibre. It's so useful. If you're only reading epubs and kepubs, you could just read them via the normal kobo software. But organizing them may be trickier than dragging them to folders for koreader. But if you have full linux, both options are available to you. But Koreader is better for reading pdf.
