If your tags are a mess, especially from imported books, I'd suggest ignoring the default tags column (mostly) and make a new custom one. I suggest you clean the tags column as you load books to your library. Then you can use the tags column.

We've had this argument before. If I use my own column, I don't have to clean the tags column, and I don't lose info that the book publisher put there.

I didn't originate the idea of making a custom tags column. Someone more clever than me suggested that for this purpose, and I've found it to work better after having tried it the other way for a year.
