I can confirm, it is possible to mount a kobo ereader on an iPad (have done this on occasions when I had download files through Safari). It shows up in Files, and has writing support. Keep in mind that it cannot show hidden files or folders, so manual firmware upgrades are out of the question.

You will need an iPad runing iOS 13.0 or later, and the "Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" (or USB-C for iPad Pro) - available separately from Apple.

Personal use, I'm 85% iPad, 10% iPhone, 5% PC. For me, ebook and ereader management falls under that 5% that's just not practical on iPad. I do often use KOReader+Dropbox for one-off transfers but I still need a desktop OS for organization and large batch copies.

Tried connecting a Paperwhite with ~2000 books to a 2017 iPad Pro once. The Files app just crashed so badly and the system became so unstable the Kindle restarted on its own and I had to hard reset the iPad.

It might be slow but the $100 Windows 10 netbook (i3-3227U) I got from ebay handles ebook management far better than my $1000+ iPad Pro does.
