P.S. I think this is what bit me, and I wasn't reading Calibre threads to hear about it. I entered several hundred books in batches, over 2-3 days (5 years ago).

Since Calibre can fix it with the book copy on my disk, I'll fix them as I need to read them. That's too many books to locate and enter again.

You can check the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre . The first message has the filename and SHA-256 checksum for various Kindle for PC/Kindle for Mac downloads. A google search on the filename should get some download links and the SHA-256 will let you check that you have an unmodified version. For v1.17 for instance, a Google search comes up with the file on filehorse.com and filesoul.com. According to my notes, the filehorse.com file is not the full installer while the filesoul.com one is the full installer with a SHA-256 that is correct. There are also sites that have what look like the installer but with a slightly different build number ( KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44170.exe vs KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe ) which I tend to avoid like the plague.

You can also use later versions where the renderer-test executable can be disabled without disabling K4PC/K4Mac. If you have v1.29 for PC, there is a workaround to disable KFX downloads that is documented in the previously mentioned thread (check the Note: For an alternative method item in the first message). The only issue with the workaround is that it works best if your K4PC install is not the default device on Amazon.
