Can we broaden this to any publisher who embeds fonts and adds hundreds of of complex CSS classes purely for use in the front/backmatter pages? Especially those colourful buttons which link to their marketing website.

Is it too much to ask that they devote a bit more time and effort to making the actual story content look nice?

I need dark fonts (good contrast). The publisher's fonts are almost always too light for me.

I just recently started using publisher defaults. And it wasn't as bad as it used to be. Probably because ereaders are now 300 ppi with frontlights, it is easier to pull off the overly thin, spindly serif fonts that are usually chosen.

But seriously do these typesetters ever look at how it reads?? Looking at the typical mmpb I would say the answer is a solid no. It is really remarkable how much money publishers claim for so little effort invested on their part.

My "favorite" horrible mistake was an ebook having the font color set to brown. It rendered on my Kobo as a light grey I did not uncover the problem until I went into Calibre to snoop around and fix it. That was only a couple of years ago btw.

OK, we'll add this in.

Why publishers have to have hundreds of unused classes to the CSS and why they have to have multiple CSS just for single pages that add nothing to the eBook I have no idea. They don't focus on making the eBooks well formatted. They just care about there advertising page.

Why would someone use colored text? That's just a really bad idea.

My favorite screw-up with fonts is with The Martian. The publisher decided to embed a font for serif, sans-serif, and monospace. They book uses all three types of fonts. But they chose to use Free Serif, Free Sans, and Free Mono. Awful fonts. Way way too light. Not even good enough for an iPhone/iPad. Of the three fonts, the worst is Free Mono. It's just very hard to read. The solution was to dump the fonts. If I was making eBooks, I would always check on an eInk device to see how it looks. I would use a 300DPI Reader and an old 800x600 Reader. As well as an iPhone, iPad, and laptop.

Some of those are due to a publisher having a corporate CSS stylesheet that is used for multiple ebooks. It's rather unlikely that any one ebook is going to use all the styles. Those I don't mind that much -- removing unused styles and then cleaning up the comments is easy enough.

What I do find objectionable is epub creation programs that place unused classes in the text files. Things like <body class="content"> where content is never defined, first-letter-? where first-letter-? is never defined.

I wish it could have the advanced settings like the usual Kobo fonts.

And then there are the books that use black text but have a background color or a background image on the body tag. That's when I want to use DNSB's boiling oil.

I've never found an issue with the default font in an ebook. For me, it just doesn't make any difference. I suppose one of these days I should experiment, but so far I just can't be bothered.

The only font adjustment I ever make is the size.

Hi JS,
Thanks for your replies.
"Svelte" isn't a name of the font. It's a description of one.

Actually, Svelte is the name of a font. I've attached an image of the font sample. And yes, I consider it ugly.

It looks like something used on an old movie that was trying to be techie. I'd never read a book using that font, it's too heavy and irregular.

DNSB, i don't know why you're making that argument.
I was the one who brought up the word svelte (cf my OP). JSWolf misunderstood me. So I was clarifying what I meant.

Or, to put it another way, Svelte may be the name of a font, but it isn't necessarily the name of the font I was talking about.

I've attached a pic of the font I described as svelte.

I gotta admit, this Simon&Schuster book which prompted this thread, the book whose body's text I described as having a font that is svelte.... Well, that svelte font, I gotta admit, is hard to read. I feel like I have to read that book under brighter ceiling light or else I feel like my eyesight has gotten bad!

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...1&d=1593450212

By the way, can you please share a pic of a PenguinRandomHouse book page that has a lot of "embedded stupid fonts in a single page"

What?! In all the books I've read so far on my Kobo Forma, there's no background color or image behind the text. Can you share a pic of what you're seeing/experiencing?
