I don't use ereaders as such, they're also too elaborate for this simple soul . I use Android devices, including a Boyue e-ink - if I could find one I'd use an e-ink Windows device. I only keep what I'm currently reading on my devices, usually 2-3 'books', I also keep a couple of reference texts.

But calibre is not the only way to move files from a desktop/laptop computer to an ereader, pretty sure the ereader suppliers (Kindle, Kobo etc) have Windows and Mac apps that can do the basics - not sure about Linux.

There is no need of any app: simply put the book into the ereader using the normal file manager of Your OS. I own a Kindle and a Kobo, but I am pretty sure that all ereaders will do the same. When You expel it the book will appear.

About apps: Kobo Desktop (not available for Linux) has the main purpose of synchronization and You can buy books from there. Works with the books You bought from Kobo. And I don't know any Kindle app to put books in Your Kindle but You can send them to Amazon by email as personal documents.

But if You use calibre to organize Your library then You naturally use it also for putting the books on the ereader. With Kobo - and many other non Kindle ereaders - You could also use ADE but calibre is much better (and works on Linux without needing Wine) so I use it only for borrowed books with DRM using the Windows partition of my dual boot PC.

All ereader devices or apps have to know about the book somehow. Kobo, Kindle and others automatically scan for changes and import them when the device is disconnected. Other apps need the user to trigger the import from within the app. Others just use the file system and you browse for the book that way.

The term "selfish" is used in the sense of taking control for its own purposes. I am sure one can name plenty of devices and applications that also do so in some way or for some purpose or another (for some communications cases, for example).

It is not derogatory and was not meant as a derogatory poke at Kobo.

Can a player be connected to the computer, and then disconnected and reconnected again from software? Instead of physically plugging it in, ejecting, unplugging, then plugging it back in?

Windows 7, Kobo Libra.
You could try one of the programs listed here https://www.raymond.cc/blog/remount-...-and-reinsert/

I will tell you the device manager option doesn't work on Win 7 the remove device and rescan might but seems excessive force when plug and unplug is much quicker.
