Not quite an urban legend. There have been quite a few occasions where the product shipped to a retailer was slightly different with different model numbers from the virtually identical product shipped to another retailer. This comes from quite a few years back when I did IT support for a local branch of an office retailer where 75% of the office furniture part numbers were unique to them. As to whether the different model numbers indicated different quality? That was something I was never interested enough in to check out.

I worked at a factory once where all working but just failing spec parts were sent to Parts Retailer who never ever made returns.

The temptation is high when demand is high and too many "just fail" QA.

If it's the same model number, it's the same model as other stores who have the same model number. What you can get is a different model number for the same item so you cannot price match.

That's true too. Also here in Ireland Supermarkets (Dunnes, Tesco, Centra/Musgrave's Group, Aldi, Lidl) often have their own brand and model number. Sometimes just stickers!
Argos actually bought some well known UK defunct brands and the real product is various makers.
UK Roberts bought by Glen-Dimplex and many models are Sangean radios, also used to be rebranded by Realistic/Radio Shack/Tandy.
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sangean_ats_818cs.html
Siemens RK-670, Radio Shack Realistic DX-392 and Roberts RC818.

I don't know who made the ill fated Tesco Hudl Tablet that "bricks" (factory reset or update?) because they turned off the servers. I think only sold in UK. I never saw it here in Ireland.
