New 6" Kindles have 167 ppi and are held closer to the eyes than 10" readers.

Kindle DX doesn't have capacitive nor the light layer, and pdf text is pretty sharp.

If you want to read PDF, you could get an 8" Kobo Forma and install KOReader or you could get a 10.3" Pocketbook. Both willl do for reading comics/manga/PDF though the Pocketbook will do better because of the larger screen.

You should have asked about installing a newer firmware before buying the DXi. You then would not have spent the money. I do hope you can return it and get your money back.
That is impossible to return the item.
If I were in the US I would follow your advice and definitely would buy and use 10.3" eReader.
Unfortunately, I am far away from there . So, I will keep DXi for reading PDFs.

For sure, I would prefer the newest eReader.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that do not allow to buy it.

Used Onyx N96ML (with frontlight and responsive pen) under 230 dollars is still a good choice IMO (its native pdf reader can open four pdf/epubs simultaneously).

There is one on ebay uk currently.

This is why you save for a new Reader instead o spending on an obsolete Reader that's not worth what you paid. That money could have gone towards a new Reader.

@JSWolf: Yep, that, too. (150dpi, compared to the 167dpi of its smaller siblings of the time. And the current norm of 300dpi).
And two other things I forgot to mention. The contrast is poor and the text is not all that sharp.

With DXi, I can start to read right away.
For a new eReader, I need to wait for an unpredictable period of time.

The first thing a DX/DXG owner should do is wipe it and dump it in electronics recycling, or maybe sell it on eBay where you might find a sucker.

The first thing a former or prospective DX/DXG owner should do is get a Kobo Forma.

The best thing a DX is good for is a doorstop.

The 9.7" screen of a Kindle DXG is LESS good for same size image based PDFs than a Kobo Aura H2O, though few PDFs are good on either.

The DXG is big and heavy and no easier to read than a 300 dpi 6" screen. I thought it might be good for someone I know with Macular degeneration. Doesn't help.

It's obsolete. Fine if you have one and can't afford better. The original idea of the DX and DXG was education. Screen, software and speed all too poor so the the scheme was scrapped and DXGs sold off cheap.

Kobo Forma as Aura One is only about 16 cm wide in landscape, so, wide A4 pdf documents with the text width over 18 cm and wider comics will be problematic if we don't like pdf reflow, because unlike with 20 cm wide Kindle DX (using KPV reader) where we can get 10-20 % magnification by removing empty margins, on Forma/Aura we have 10-20 % reduction in the text size.

I have elder members in my family who always use Kindle DX outdoors despite owning 8" Pocketbooks, and I would also almost always use Kindle DX outdoors (or 10" Hanvon) for such wide pdf/comics instead of Aura One, and indoors it would be iPad or monitor.

I'm not a student anymore, so the flipping & highlighting speed is not as important to me and I still rather use pen & paper for the note taking although several of my eink readers and lcd tablets have a good pen support.

I've changed two batteries on my DXG in the last six years and will probably buy the third for the summer 2020, unless I buy a newer 10" eink with frontlight or hopefully Clearink tablet.

Straw man. Kobo's PDF viewer has zoom capabilities as well so you get the same magnification factor so it's really only the physical scaling difference. At which point the 1440x1920 at 300 PPI Forma kicks the 1200x824 at 150 PPI Kindle DX's proverbial ass. Forma's screen is sharper and has a better contrast ratio. Forma is significantly lighter and is significantly faster.

While I was figuring out what to do after my "adventure" with Kobo customer disservice I dug out my DXG.

It was bad compared to my Aura One. Really bad.

I can easily zoom-in on two-column A4 pdf, reading four screens per pdf page on Aura One in portraite, or easily read A4 pdfs with only 16 cm text width (wider empty margins) two screens per page in landscape, but one-column A4/letter size pdf documents with the 17-19 cm text width (narrow empty margins) can only be reflowed because 8" readers are only 16 cm wide in landscape, and I would not try panning on every single text line even on my iPad pro.

I've bought Aura One mainly for reading scanned paperbacks/hardcovers that make majority of my current pdf books and although those are easily legible in Aura One's portraite (12 cm width) they are also as legible on Kindle DX portraite (14 cm wide).
