Lots of things about Amazon and Bezos the control freak I don't like... But considering that Amazon is the *only* ereader that will let you upload your own sideloaded books to their big database in the sky and keep them synchronized across devices, Kindle is arguably the most friendly e-reader to sideloading your own books of them all!

Sorry, but I'm not giving Amazon copies of books they didn't supply. Where is the 3rd party auditing that they are not using that information or separately storing metadata or whatever. All privacy issues and illegal in Europe. Your own genuinely private & secure hosting can be as little as $1 per week.

tolino will also let you upload to their cloud. They do it from the device, rather than an email. But, I have only the one tolino device. So, while I have tested the add-to-the-cloud, I don't know exactly what is being synced.

Regarding the alleged removal of books by Amazon, I'm wondering whether the complaint was made by someone who cancelled his Kindle Unlimited subscription. Under these circumstances the K.U. books will disappear when the Kindle connects to wi-fi. Can't think of any other way it would happen.
