I took mine on holiday to Turkey, and it's also come with me a few times to London or wherever I happen to be going. Fits nicely inside my inner jacket pocket.

Don't keep your reader chained up at home, let it out in the fresh air

My 500 & my wife's 500 went with us to Scotland. My 505 & my wife's 500 has gone to Orlando, Florida. My 505 & my wife's 500 will be going to Scotland in December. My 505 travels with me all the time in my bag. We have never had a problem.

Mine is pretty well traveled too. NZ to Australia, Japan, the US a couple of times, up and down the country dozens of times. I rarely leave home without it!

Take it and treat it well and you'll be fine.

Everybody seems to be in favor of me taking the Reader with me, and I shall.

Now I ask a couple more questions:

1) What's the best way to recharge if I'm not taking a laptop? I don't expect to drain the battery completely in the 10 days before flying home, but it's nice to have options.

2) Where can I get free guidebooks, phrasebooks, and other useful tourist books to add to my Reader?

Best thing to do for recharging is to get an AC charger. It recharges the batteries in about half the time it take the USB cable. Also, it is rated for 220 50 volts so all you nees is the plug adapter.

Go to a game store and buy a PlayStation Portable (PSP) charger. The PSP uses exactly the same charger as the Reader, and PSP chargers are a fraction the price of the official Sony charger for the Reader.

I think that you may have to pay for up to date guidebooks.

However, I have downloaded extracts from tourist websites and converted them for the Reader.

Maybe a good question is to ask if and how people protected their Readers on travel. For example the types of cases used etc.

I just carry my Gen3 in a shoulder-bag in its standard cover. No problem at all.
