As I read the spec it says :

Waterproof from the inside out with HZO Protection™ IPX8 - up to 60 mins in 2 metres of water.

Looking at what IPX8 says I find :
Quote:
IPX-8 Protected against water submersion - The equipment is suitable for continual submersion in water under conditions which are identified by the manufacturer.
(my italics)

So if when the device is certified the manufacturer imposes conditions such as the USB port should be sealed using a particular method they would be covered for certification.

HZO Protection is a propriety technology described as :
Quote:
HZO’s technology is applied directly to the circuitry of devices and components, creating a physical barrier that protects electronics against damage caused by water and other corrosive liquids, humidity, sweat, dust and debris
So the circuit board should be proof against water even if it actually gets in to the device, however I can't see that of the USB port itself was covered with water any circuit board protection would help.

Does the Aura have any sort of bung supplied for closing the external ports ? I ask because I think I have seen somewhere a reference to a Kobo device with some form of external port closure.

Even if technically Kobo have covered themselves from a certification point of view I would think that, depending on where the O.P. resided, consumer protection legislation should be applicable if a device advertised as Waterproof failed due to limited immersion.

I'd be inclined to go back to the seller of the device and ask them to supply a remedy.

No, the Kobo Aura One doesn't have a bung for closing external ports. It's like new waterproof smartphones where they use a seal and some kind of special coating so you don't need a door.

The Aura One is waterproof. It claims so on the box and their website. "Waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water." The Kobo Aura, the original one with no One at the end is not waterproof. The Kobo Aura One is though.
