You may want to check the IOS plugin.
After removing the customize.py file under appdata\roaming\calibre, all went well.
Most plugins worked fine until installing the IOS reader plugin.

Can also confirm removing "iOS reader applications.zip" resolved this problem.

I don't have the "iOS reader applications" plugin installed. Is it just the presence of the .zip file that causes the install failure ?

UPDATE: yes, even though the plugin is NOT installed, just removing the files in Appdata\Roaming\Calibre solved this problem. I was able to successfully install and run 3.1.1

Glad to hear it. Since this plugin does not work anyway after apple restricted access to iOS devices, I think I will black list it in the next calibre release to prevent calibre from loading it at all.

Note that to fix this problem caused by the iOS Reader plugin in 3.1.1 follow these steps:

Start calibre from a command prompt:
Code:
```
 calibre.exe --ignore-plugins
```
Then go to Preferences->Plugins. Click "Show only user installed plugins". Remove the iOS Reader plugin and Marvin XD plugin (if installed)

Now quit calibre and run it normally, you should be fine.

It's been a while, but yes, those plugins weren't very good and they had also stopped working due to the Apple Restrictions, which Kovid mentioned, in the I end up using OPDS with Marvin, since I'm still on iOS 6.

Can't remove anything or change anything if Calibre won't run at all.
Should have read these before installing. First time Calibre has ever fubar'd on me.
Guess I have to do the uninstall routine...oh joy

Went from 3.0 to 3.1.1...followed instructions to remove the calibre2 folder...nada...uninstalled, reinstalled...nada...uninstalled again...nada. Re downloading and trying again.
when I click on the icon I get nothing at all with either 3.0 or 3.1.1...tried a restart as well...nada. Running windows 10 64bit...dloaded 3.1.1 64 bit as well.

Just finished installing 64 bit...nada again...Calibre is dead on my computer.

No Calibre...sigh

Well after the fifth uninstall/install of 3.0 I finally got it working again. Not going to install 3.1.1.
Whew...

Gracias, pero no tengo instalado, o al menos no encuentro, ese ZIP ni el IOS Reader plugin ni el Marvin XD plugin. Sólo tengo instalado el Apple Itunes interface 1.1.1 de GRiker para comunicar calibre con itunes e ibooks.
Con Calibre 3.0.0 trabajo normal pero si actualizo deja de iniciarse y sale el mensaje de que no funciona.
