It happened to me a few times. I currently have a book on hold like this. Libraries seem to buy by demand so you just gotta hope others put a hold on it too.

But in my case the book disappeared from Overdrive entirely; it seems the library had made the decision to buy it but Overdrive decided to withdraw it for some reason.

Yes, or the publisher pulled it. I notice both books mentioned as disappearing are from the same publisher. Perhaps they've changed something do do with when/how they make their books available to libraries?

I realize I have absolutely no idea how Overdrive, or any of the other services libraries get books from, acquire titles to offer. The title I wanted from Overdrive is in Hoopla (both ebook and audiobook), so the publisher must not have a problem with that. I suppose it's a money issue.

Since when do physical library books fall apart after only one year? My library has books whose age is measured in decades.

Has anyone suggested that they do? There's no reason that ebook licensing models have to be an exact duplicate of paper book sales. A library might, for example, decide to license 5 copies of a popular book in the year it's initially released, and then reduce that to 2 copies the next year when its popularity has declined and there are fewer requests for loans of it. Time-limited licensing gives them that flexibility. Most libraries have storerooms full of books that nobody ever looks at.

The problem, Harry, is that the BPHs have combined time-limited licensing with higher prices than consumer-grade unlimited time licensing.

But eBooks can still be a good buy for the library, compared to paper, because most of the paper book cost is the physical library space. My neighborhood 35,000 volume library just did a $3 million restoration, which comes to a one-time cost of $85 a book. Add to that annual costs for staff, utilities, and maintenance, and library eBook pricing can be competitive to cheap.

And now on the romance front Harlequin has made some secret deal with Overdrive that let's them have precedence over other romance titles. So now the romance category is pepper with hundreds of Harlequin titles which are mediocre at best then full romance novels from popular or new author from the big publishing houses.

Speaking of Overdrive: My library had ten copies of a book I had on hold. I was showing as next in line. Yesterday I saw that the library had acquired four additional copies; now I am number five on fourteen copies, next in line.
If I was next in line when the library had ten copies, how come the additional four copies got loaned out to folks who were not me??? |

Now it looks like there must be an Overdrive issue with Paula (Girl on the Train) Hawkins's new book. I've been on the wait list; the publication date is tomorrow, but now Overdrive has moved back its date a week, till May 9. Grr.
