It is entirely possible that with this new firmware that the battery meter will need to be calibrated.

Right. Do you happen to know what is the best way to calibrate the KA1's battery meter?

This is ridiculous. Some folks at Kobo should be put out to grass.

This is after restart AFTER update, so no lurking process in the background, not turning on wifi, etc. This is grotesque.

Off to eBay it goes, and back to Kindle I go, since, in their infinite wisdom, Kobo killed the only other model that could eventually interest me, the Glo HD.

A month and a half for THAT? Someone's got to be kidding me here. What a joke.
In another thread, someone said he had the battery drain, did a factory reset, installed the new firmware and it was OK.

The way I try to calibrate is to let the device drain and charge for 3 times. You have to drain as far as will go and ignore the low power message. Then charge to 100%.

It's a bit stranger: so, I charged it up after loosing most of the battery during the night/evening. It topped 100%, I unplugged and left it alone. It lost 5 percent in roughly half an hour. Restarted, and it began draining battery at the same rate. Restarted yet again, and guess what, it's now stabilized. So far.

One way or another, there are still nasty battery bugs lurking.

Isn't this a bad idea with Li-ion batteries, though?

Could be the battery needs more training to give a reliable indication of the amount of charge that is being used.
On my glo hd I got fast battery drop about ~15% in couple of mins. But then it was working just fine. Im not mad at all, after one full charge it holded 60 reading hours and there is still 35% of battery. I bet it will reach point when percentage will fastly drop again.

Not if you charge the battery right away after it is emptied.

I don't mind losing the patch, as it has turned out that I don't need it.
If you are updating a device the firmware update is intended for, you would copy the entire contents of the .zip file to the .kobo directory. OTOH, if you are updating a device that the firmware update is not intended for, you would copy the KoboRoot.tgz file only into the .kobo directory.

The patches would have to be re-installed after the firmware update as the modified files would be overwritten by the update.

So if you have a KA1 or Aura2, copy the entire set of files, if you are updating an H2O (as an example), just copy the KoboRoot.tgz. As the Glo HD is also a mark 6 hardware, you should be able to copy the entire file set.

While I haven't seen a Kobo ereader bricked by a firmware update not intended for it, there is no guarantee that this might not happen.

I upgraded to the new firmware last night. I ensured that autosync was disabled. I disabled wifi and then turned backlight to 5% and read for a few minutes. The battery was still in the 97% range when I closed the cover for the night. This morning it was at 57% battery. I did a factory reset and started a battery charge and will wait a few days for official release of the firmware. If this doesn't fix my problem I'm going to get the Kindle Oasis and say goodbye to Kobo.

It is no where near as bad as everyone thinks. It is better to avoid it, but don't get hung up about it. Just use the device as it is intended to be used and recharge when convenient.

And the big issue, as JSWolf stated, is if you don't recharge within a reasonable amount of time.

I have a KA1, so the firmware is intended for that. I'll update the reader tonight

Right. You have to do this a few times. So if you have your KA1 out and about with you, and the battery is low, make sure you have a battery backup with you so you can charge to full.
