They probably wouldn't at first, but I could imagine getting mad at em about a month later. I remember one of the reading apps I first used would actually do that, about after 10 pages I'd get a popup add that wouldn't go away until I hit the back button. Yeah, I didn't keep that app long. Granted its good that those ads are only screensaver and home screen.
Actually before I click "Buy", I read a story last night about Kobo users lost a lot of books due to a firmware update that made books disappear. I'm not sure if they were books they bought from the Kobo storefront or side loaded....has that issue been a problem for any of you guys? Last edited by JimPhelps; 05-08-2016 at 05:22 PM. |

In my experience this is a one off somewhat niche issue and it sounds like it should be fixed (or fixable for most people) |

You can also expand Glo HD's memory. It merely have a microsd card inside, that is the memory. You just need to clone it into a bigger card: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=261362
Simple. |

K5 (the $50 one) with and SD card. Put all your ebooks on Calibre, purchase Calibre Companion, set it to download to your SD card, and put all your books on the SD card. I currently have over 9000 books on my SD card. Since I applied tags in Calibre, I can search according to any of the tags I set, as well as by author, series, date and date read. K5 has blue shade, which is why I went this direction, and I am very happy.

Well, I figured today before I got to work I'd drop in and just pick one up. So I stopped in Barnes and Noble and grabbed a Nook Glowlight plus. I spent about 4 hours after getting home just trying to get the thing to charge and update.
And yeah, I guess I should eat crow....I'm not liking it anywhere close to what I thought I would with an e-ink device. The screen feels weird to me. Like a kinda scrape-y sensation, not as smooth or polished as I thought. I guess since I'm so used to my Nook HD+ and phone screens so maybe that is usual, I don't know. I was happy I seem to have so much room to add my side loaded books from Calibre---but one problem. And I really hope this isn't an issue on the Kindle Paperwhite cause after I return this Nook that's what I think I'll get instead. On the Nook, it reads my calibre loaded books as "My Files"--ok, I got it--but it won't let me create different shelves for them, I can only create shelves for the B&N purchased content. So if I had history books for example, I couldn't divide them up into Civil War or World War II subjects to scroll through browsing. I did not see that happening. It didn't even occur to me that could happen since the reader app on my phone that I use, and even my HD+ lets me divide that stuff into different sub sections for easier browsing, side loaded content or purchased books. Is this an issue on the Paperwhite or Kobo Glo HD? If so...I might just have to stuff that money I was spending on this on something else. Is it possible to divide the sideloaded stuff up like you can on the---well, the app I use is Universal Book Reader on my android phone. (I know, the FB reader is the more popular one, but it works for me.) Last edited by JimPhelps; 05-11-2016 at 02:52 AM. |

You can certainly create collections on the PW if you wish to do so, although I don't use them myself.

Ahh the tablet. Thanks Harry. I already have a tablet Sydney's Mom. I'm just talking about e-ink devices, thanks though.
Is there a limit on the size of the collections you can make on the Kindles Harry? If I had only realized that the OS of the NGP was the same as the Nook app on my phone, I would have crossed the street to Best Buy today instead of going to B&N. I couldn't make shelves using that app either... |

No, there's no limit to the size of a collection.

![]() As I said before, B&N is acting as though they don't want to be a serious competitor. They aren't acting like people who want to incentivize you to buy their product. Quote:
Effect: you have extra storage for sideloaded books. Quote:
![]() Think of it as "B&N are literally the only vendors out there who don't offer such basic and fundamental feature". The problem is that this is characteristic of B&N's mindset. They act like you should feel privileged to buy books from them (because, heck, they are like the king of paper bookstores, right? so why should they pander to you), and don't put any work into making their service something you want to spend time in. |

Just to weigh in on the Glo HD vs Paperwhite comparison.
![]() Glo HD: I owned mine for 4 months until it started acting up. Advantage of Kobo is that since I own epubs, transferring them is easy, especially when used with the Kobo Utilities plugin. Software is a bit buggy (echoing the sentiments of many here). Screen is glossy/smooth. I do like the reading stats, automatically categorising books into "read, unread, and reading" lists, swipe at the side to increase or decrease light, font customisations are better, and the option to choose what kind of tap zones I like (i.e. where to tap to bring out the menu, to get to the previous and next pages). Simply put, Kobo feels much more personal. What made me decide to switch after 2 Kobo devices is their after-sales. I thought since they release Kobo items in my country, they'd at least have a service center. Unfortunately, I have to ship it back to Canada. And the same goes with those bought at their authorised reseller. Paperwhite: the software feels much more stable for me; basically everything feels faster. Only option to organise books though is by making collections. Jailbreaking will add more customisation options though. And since my books are epubs, I have to take time to convert them first before sending it to my device (I prefer keeping epubs on my computer). The hardware feels sturdier to me and the glass is rougher so everytime I touch it, it reminds me of the texture of paper in books. Not exactly the same though but reminiscent. But the winning point for me is the after-sales. I talked to a representative and they are willing to refund the international shipping costs I will incur if I need to return my device for replacement. Having experienced both devices, I personally prefer the Kindle better. ![]() |
