FBReader also seems to have some sync functions but I haven't read up on the details. |

Who syncs anything? I transfer via computer and USB. Once it's converted, it stays in a library file that the other half can also use.
If I'm using the Android Acer A-500, all I need to do is plug in the USB, get to the ext. card, and copy and paste from downloaded file folders. I can use the same card (or copies thereof) in Calibre, whatever current phone I have, and in both the Nook and the Kobo. The only problem with some Android readers is they want shelves, and I don't. I just want a list. So far FB reader lets me get to the file tree with the least hassle. FB reader saves your page on Android. I opened a file after about a year and the page was still current. It hadn't started over. I typically don't want reading information. I usually get too into what I'm reading to care. You bookmark a physical book, do you write notes on it? People who read on multiple devices. If you start reading a book on an eInk device, and then want to carry on reading on your phone or tablet, it's extremely useful to have your current reading position synced between devices, as well as, perhaps, things like bookmarks.

Syncing works great if you are reading on more than 1 device. Reminds me, I want to bake a tres leches cake today. I am so glad bookmarks transfer over too. |

Yeah, I have to admit, I'm a wireless transfer and sync use. Even though my system is light years away from what I want, these are features I use all the time. I'm constantly switching from phone to tablet (before it dies yesterday) and sometimes laptop. If I add an actual e-reader, I'll need it all the more.
If you only use one device and are happy messing with cables, that's fine. I generally don't bother with cables anymore if I can help it as it's just not as fast or streamlined. But that's why choice is so great. ![]() |

How reliable is syncing for you folks? I find it doesn't work fast enough for me. I will be reading on eink and then want to go to my car and listen to tts on a Fire (or vice versa).
The syncing is out of date and sometimes it syncs to the wrong book, ie the one that is not as far along. |

I can't say for long term use but I tried messing around with it on two Android devices with Kindle apps and the sync was instantaneous both ways. When I closed out the book on one device (keeping the app open) and went to the app on the other, it would trigger an auto sync, pull down the latest location and there it was. I think I remember it even syncing correctly if I didn't exit the book. The only thing that it didn't seem to do, which surprised me, was auto downloading the latest book I was reading. It appears to keep that part manual. Perhaps there is a setting that changes it but I haven't had a chance to go digging for it. Once the book was downloaded, it synced locations immediately.

I use the sync a few books at a time. I have to sometimes switch between devices because of lighting issues and my Voyage does not leave the house. Thus, if I am reading a Baen book purchased from Baen, once sent to the Cloud, I can read it on any device linked to my account. When I'm done with the book, I zap it out of the cloud unless a family member has requested to read it (they all have kindles linked to my account).
Amazon doesn't care what you have emailed to your device. However, I can tell you from experience, clicking through 700 books is a pain compared with using Calibre and sideloading. |
