Not anymore. With the new versions, there are times that a newly loaded book still needs to be formatted by the reader.

I just got my 505 yesterday and I have just experienced this issue. I opened a large book, it showed as formatting then reset, then shut off.....then every time I tried to switch on it switched off. I was using a MS at the time so i removed it then switched on let it run and then reinserted the MS and allowed it to check it, then my collections on the MS had gone !

I have just added them back in and will see if this formatting/reset issue happens again.

I was concerned and wondered if it would have to go back, but sounds like this is a bug, or should I be more concerned???

Good afternoon babyd, other than the reset problem I hope you are enjoying your new arrival. Have you checked to see whether the new firmware dated 24/7/2008 http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PRS505 is installed in your Reader?

I ask because another mobileread member who got a 505 recently (29th August 2008) said that it had not been updated.

Did you use eBook Library to transfer the content to the MS? If so, it would be pre-paginated and the reader would not havr to do it for you. Thus, if there is an issue with that eBook and reformatting on the 505, then you should not have a problem. eBook Library does the pagination for you and puts the info into the reader so it is already done.

Sorry I should have been more specific.

Yes I am using eLibrary to transfer my books to both reader and MS. I removed the MS and just used internal memory and it did it again on there, this time on a small book. Had to do device shutdown then the book was fine but collections gone again......

I have a second unit coming today (long story replacement as we thought this one went missing) I was supposed to refuse delivery but maybe I need to accept it and try it out......

Doesn't matter if they are the Sony lrf free classics or books I created in calibre or BD, some will format when I open them, which I don't mind. its the not turning page or zooming when I press zoom that bugs me. I have to turn off from device shut down to solve that book, the rest of the books and menus are okay. just getting a no entry symbol on the bottom bar when pressing zoom or page turns when the page sticks.....odd

I initially thought it may be because they were on the memory stick but still did it when I removed it and used internal memory. it does seem to happen more to the ones I converted myself on BD and calibre, but that can't be it? I followed all instructions and those same books that stuck were fine after switching off.......

This doesn't sound normal. Maybe try formatting internal memory (it's in advanced options).

It has just done the reset bug again too. Was formatting a large book, then it reset. Went back to same book it took ages to format but was fine, then I tried to increase font size, formatted again and rest. ARRGHHH

When you finish transferring your eBooks to the reader via eBook Library, do you eject the reader using the button on the left pane before you disconnect the reader from the computer? If you do disconnect too soon before content is done being transferred, you will sometimes cause the content to need to be reformatted internally and/or lose collections.

Hi JSWolf

I do wait till its done then eject via the button you mention.

its not doing it all the time, just the odd occassion. I have had it format then rest on me again but it hasn't gotten stuck on a page again yet, I am about to add all my collections back and see if that triggers it again......

Updated: I have tried the same book over and over. it is now only formatting and resetting....it can't be the book as sometimes it formats okay, another time it will format and reset.....

will continue to play over the weekend and see how it goes.

I seriously love this thing though, it is amazing.

Okay, there is definitely a problem with this unit.

I was reading an ebook from Waterstones and I had a few bookmarks in it. I went to remove the bookmark from a page and it just reset itself again........so it seems to reset on button presses every so often. Of course,. all my bookmarks were gone when it rebooted.......

This particular device is so unstable, it resets while formatting or zooming or marking a page...................sometimes its fine but I have had approx 12 resets today alone...........I certainly don't remember seeing anything on here about them being this unstable and so many resets, so I guess mine must be faulty............I hope a replacement turns up as Waterstones online have sold out !!

Are you sure the battery is fully charged? You should get it replaced. Why would a replacement magically show up... that would be cool.

HI Pilotbob

Yeah, I charged the battery fully last night using my PSP charger so its fine........

There is a replacement on the way as this one was so delayed by DHL that Waterstones thought it best to send a replacement as we thought it had gone missing. Then I was to refuse delivery if this one turned up. but now they know it may have a fault they said to accept the next one and try that then return my first one next week. Funny though now DHL haven't arrived with the replacement LOL Just hope it arrives Monday otherwise its a 10 day wait for next lot of stock.

What you describe is definitely not normal that I know of. So hopefully the second one will work normally.

Fingers crossed the next one arrives and works . I am still loving it, even with the annoying bug. Wouldn't let my Sony go for anything now, well only for a new one of course LOL its just annoying when it formats, resets loses my collections or I unmark a bookmark and it rests then loses all my bookmarks.....

I currently have a love/ hate relationship, far more love than hate though, how can you hate something so pretty and shiny

So did you find out if the reset bug was only on the first unit?
