If you're reading in conditions that are so dark that you can't see the screen without the front light, then you need the light to read with.

Is there a scenario in which you need to turn the light off? I can't think of one; perhaps someone can give an example of one?
Choice is good. Though you may be unable to think of a situation where said choice has value does not mean that there is no case.

Lack of choice (and catering only to the mass) becomes procrustean. Kinda late for that, but there you go.

I so agree with you. Most of the time my PW2 is set to a light setting of 10.

One concrete example for needing "true off" state: My PW1 now has hairline crack in light-guide layer which causes that area to be extra extra bright. And if my Kindle wasn't jailbreaked now I would be f*cked. Because that line is almost the same brightness even when Kindle is set to lowest value.
Since it is jailbreaked I can turn the light off and at least read on it when outdoors without having that bright line killing my enjoyment.

Sounds like you need a new ebook reader. And probably not a Kindle. So that you'll be a happy camper.

Don't really "need" new Kindle, this one still works and is still usable, just as it would be usable if/when one or all of the LEDs die(d). I'm happy camper because I was fortunate (& wise) enough to have jailbreaked my PW1 in advance.
But because I'm picky and ebook enthusiast I'll buy new Kindle soon as I get some extra money, but will still keep my PW1 and use it for reading non-fiction PDFs via KOreader (which I can't have on new Paperwhite because there is no jailbreak without "hardware intervention") and when I get sick of those huge default margins on new Paperwhite.
