1. Run iTunes. 2. Connect my iPad to my PC. 3. Select the iPad in iTunes. 4. Click on "Apps". 5. Scroll down the list of apps until I find "Goodreader" and click on it. That gives me a pane with a list of documents currently in Goodreader, and I can drag and drop files in or out of the app from Windows Explorer. More often than not, though, the PDF I want to read is on the Internet, and in that case I either enter the download URL directly in Goodreader, or I can open it in Safari (the iPad's web browser), and then tap the screen and select "Open In..." to transfer it to Goodreader. I can transfer from Dropbox in the same way. One reason I like Goodreader is that it gives you a full hierarchical folder tree in which to store your documents. Excellent app. |

Choose a tablet with 4:3 ratio. It doesn't have to be an iPad if you want to use Android.
I bought a cheap Chinese 9,7'' tablet (Onda V973) over two years ago and it still does a beautiful job as a reader for PDF books (including scans), magazines and comics. Most importantly, it has a really good display. Nowadays, there are probably better choices. In any case, I would focus on non-panoramic displays. |

Apple is really no more closed than Android, if you think about it. I don't know about now, but Apple used to have way more apps available, and better ones, too. When I was looking for a tablet, there wasn't a decent astronomy app available for Android. Of course, this was a few years ago.

I have both Apple and Android tablets and, as I said earlier in the thread, I've not found a PDF reader for Android that's as good as Goodreader for iOS.

Is it the Goodreader that is so good vs the Apple tablet itself? I see that the Nexus 9 has the same resolution as the ipad.

After thinking and researching some more, I find that the first decision for me to make is:
do I want a tablet with a stylus for note taking, (something like Galaxy Note 10.1) - that means I give up the 4.3 aspect ratio that appears to be better for pdf, also, giving up the Super Amoled screen that is said to have darker black fonts (something that my Nexus 7 does not have). If I decide not to go with a stylus, then I think I'm going to wait for the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7" that was just announced (4.3 aspect ratio and Super Amoled screen). |

Yes, it's the app. For me personally, it's the app that drives the decision-making process. As you very rightly say, high-end Android tablets are certainly on a par with the iPad hardware-wise, and generally cheaper too, but the app is what you actually use, and iOS apps do often seem to be more polished than their Android equivalents.
