Kobo highlighting on their e-readers is terrible. I've been using Kobos on and off for years and if I even SUSPECT that I will want to highlight anything in a book (especially highlighting from page to page) I get the Kindle book or iBooks version instead.

Not sure what you mean by unreliability. I've haven't seen any issues with annotations/highlights/reading position—on books purchased from Kobo in the kepub format—synchronizing across eInk/iOS/Android/Windows. Epub format since you need to download and sideload, you're on your own.

I'll back that. Any time I have checked, the bookmarks have synced perfectly across all platforms.
