Yeah, here - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,3323-3.html

and here - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...er,3040-3.html

"According to its spec sheet, Amazon is using the same 6" E Ink 16-level gray scale display (600 x 800 pixel resolution at 167 PPI) on the third- and fourth-gen Kindles. After using the new silver Kindle for a few hours, though, it felt like I was reading text on an inferior screen.

Turning on our microscope, text on the fourth-generation Kindle appears more dithered around the borders. Meanwhile, text on the Kindle Keyboard is slightly sharper, and the black is a little darker.

We called up E Ink Corporation to ask if this was a batch-related issue, and was told that this is most likely due to Amazon choosing a particular grade of display panels. So, while the new Kindle comes at a lower price, the company is probably cutting its costs as well by using a slightly cheaper display.

Thanks for digging this up. Interesting, indeed.

Going with the info in the above posts, eInk likely doesn't specifically "produce" different grades, but more likely grades the production and quite plausibly sell the "best" screens at a premium over not quite as good screens. We know there is fair bit of variation among supposedly identical devices so there's no reason to think that there isn't variation within or between production runs and no reason to think eInk wouldn't separate them out and price them differently.

The videos we've seen comparing the PW3 to the Voyage are worthless as they use two different fonts. The Voyage uses Caecilia and the PW3 uses Bookerly. That is no way to do a proper comparison.

Could be the text on the pw3 is finer so it does not look as dark. But he showed the pw3 briefly next to the voyage and the voyage looked better. Not encouraging.

Oh well, I'll probably skip this generation.

You didn't read what I wrote. The font on the PW3 was NOT the same as on the Voyage. Because of this, a comparison of the two screens is not possible. You have to have the same font with the same page from the same book with the same settings. That's the only way to compare.

^^^ I was responding to the whole thread. Anyway I did read what you wrote. The two fonts are similar enough that you can make reasonable comparison with respect to contrast.

No you cannot make a reasonable comparison. You can have two similar fonts at a different weight for each and that will make the screens look different. So no, you need the same exact font.
