Why would there be a lower chance of getting a good display from a retail store than from Amazon? The proportion of people who get Kindles with faulty displays seems to be pretty low regardless of where they're bought from.

OK, fair point. I guess it depends if you're going to the store to look at a Kindle to decide whether or meets your needs, or going there knowing what you want to buy.

That and it's stupid on the part of the shop to allow functional display models become non functional and remain that way. It demonstrates a lack of interest in the product, and indicates to the customer that the business dealings with him/her will be treated in a similar manner. It certainly does to me!

I try not to take it personally. Yes, the devices should work and be functional but I know that the workers are getting paid minimum wage or just above minimum wage and have a lot of tasks to do. As someone mentioned before, they're primarily focused on making a sale.

Maybe I should amend that. At Best Buy, at least, it appears they're likely focused on making a sale for certain products. When my husband bought his tablet, they pushed the Samsung tablets hard, even though I knew (and maybe the sales people too) there were other tablets that would meet his needs for slightly less money. The Samsung display (and the Apple one too) has nice, shiny, properly functioning displays. Maybe they both paid more money for their big display areas with fully functioning devices. Maybe Amazon doesn't.
Either way, I think that a lot of what you see happening at these big box stores is not really the policy of the sales people on the floor but perhaps the store itself. Retail store employees don't have a lot of autonomy, they're pretty much told what to do and what to focus on. If the Kindles aren't working, then more than likely the store just doesn't care about that device. Does it sucks for the customer? Yeah, it does. I hate when I want to test a device and it doesn't work. It's annoying. That being said, I've bought a lot of devices (including my current Kindle PW, computers, etc.) without having experience with a demo and I've been ok. I guess ultimately, it's one of those situations you can't do much about. I mean if you really want to see how the device works, the demo unit isn't working and a salesperson won't help, then you could always take it up with a manager. |

I'm sorry -- I wasn't clear. I meant the way the Kindles are displayed in Staples and Office Depot. I'm sorry for the ambiguity. Many times they won't have one on display at all (just an empty place where it's supposed to be), or, if they do, it won't be charged, so you can't try it.

Yep. If you just want to pick one up, Office Depot or Staples are good places to go. Actually I have nothing against Best Buy. I just factor in that their salesman don't really know the product, but they usually have a good supply of Kindles.

I will not shop at Worst Buy ever again. (Microwave special order from hell)
If you want to know what BB is all about. Stand near the door a short time before opening. SALES team BUILDING. You can HEAR it They Push the high margin items over better items at the same price. Leaving Broken Demonstration units on Display seems to be a common fault. Probably they need Corporate approval to remove them as they lose 'Prominent Placement fees" |

I'm OK with my local Best Buy stores, as long as I don't need to consult anyone about what I'm buying. Maybe some folks there know what they are talking about, but I don't like the odds of stumbling on one of those.
Whenever I'd go there, my wife would say "Why are you going there again, you're only going to get angry." I now say "No, it's OK, I don't need to talk to anyone!" My local store does have both the PW and KV on working display, and it's been the ONLY place I've been able to try out the KV. ApK p.s. I do need to give props to the auto installer at our BB who helped us with some bluetooth handsfree gear in my wife's van. He was indeed knowledgeable, helpful, courteous, and did a great job. Wish I could remember his name! Last edited by ApK; 05-20-2015 at 02:52 PM. |
