I totally agree with @theducks. Sometimes, we forget that things totally obvious... really aren't.

During my working career, I have taught both young and old, “on site” and in the classroom. One of the things I had to keep in mind, was that which seemed elementary to me, was often not the case with the student. Sometimes I was amazed at an individual’s lack of common sense. That was, until I realised that this “common sense” wasn’t actually thus, but more a lack of understanding of primary principles in a topic that was, well, not common ground for most people.
Telling someone “its easy”, or asking “what’s so hard about it”, doesn’t really help I’m afraid. I know most people say these things out of frustration, when they themselves are able to breeze through a procedure as easily as swatting a fly, but cannot then understand why others may have a problem. But for those who are lacking, for whatever reason, in the basic underpinning knowledge required to get them to the starting point of where you might jump in with instruction, it isn’t so easy. Also, given that we are talking about actual programming here, if something did go awry, then where would that leave the novice? I really appreciate that some of you have tried your best to help me with my conundrum, and I only wish I was more confident, and had a basic understanding of programming. I have a pretty full on program myself right of now, and don’t have the time to learn programming skills. Hopefully in the future I will give it a go, as I’m sure it isn’t totally beyond my abilities to learn the basics. Thank you. |

Hey, all I said was that given a basic understanding of certain not-so-common-knowledge, there is no reason to say on top of that that "it isn't for the faint of heart".
Which to my mind implies the need to actually write significant new code, or something similar... rather than merely using the aforementioned slightly-geeky knowledge of a command line. |

@Saxguy, the problem here is that we are not talking about programming but, as @eschwartz says, slightly geek commands or non basic command to control your computer.
Anyway, you always need some knowledge (people can say that knit is easy but give two needles ![]() |

There is obviously SOME concern on the part of the programmers to cater to those who don't know how to run command line scripts (the general user) - or why would there be a GUI content server at all?
IMHO it would be very simple to add that functionality to the GUI.... but those who regularly provide program updates to Calibre have the computer know how to run the CMD line and think it is very simple... How could we persuade them that not everyone is as smart as they are?? lolz |

Well, the cli allows hosting multiple physical libraries, which is the main thing multiple invocations is useful for. I would guess incorporating multiple filters is non-trivial anyway.

This has been an interesting dialogue, but nonetheless, I do hope Kovid at least gets the chance to see/consider the OP's original request.
It struck me as a quite useful innovation. |

The ability to add restrictions/virtual libraries per user in the content server is on my TODO list for the content server re-write. In the meantime, you can use the workaround of running multiple content servers on different ports using the command line.

As always, thank you Kovid.
I suspect the OP, and certainly I shall be grateful when the Content Server rewrite emerges. |

So will we all -- the rumored rewrite is supposed to include server-based library management as well!

That way, one could create a 'safe' virtual library, and hide the "All books" tab. |
