@ eschwartz: I didn't see your post update until now.

@BR: You are right about the first code example. I will investigate the second. I am not a programmer so this will take some time.

Thank you both for some hints I can follow.

New Features
  • An all new random cover generation algorithm, which generates covers using many different color schemes and cover styles
Now when you click the Generate cover button in the Edit Metadata dialog a cover based on the book metadata is generated using random colors and styles. You can customize the random cover generation by long clicking the Generate Cover button, which will popup a dialog where you can create new color schemes and customize other aspects of the generated cover as well.
So if you downgrade instead of updating, you will get this kind of cover generation back:

Assuming that is what you want.

again for not having to search how far to downgrade.

For the time being that is what I will be doing. Since my script does not open Calibre at all I do not find out about new versions that often and hardly ever read what was changed.

Yes, and my next step will be to change the image for "library.png" and see what happens. I assume that is what is used.

Trying not to be greedy even though I am

Is there any way to also hack the "Calibre 2.3.0" logo at the cover bottom and delete/hide it? I can't find anything.

You can hack the code, starting around here: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...covers.py#L452

Developing the code

The new cover generator was made in order to make it easier to customize.
