It happened to me the first time I tried to download a free kindle book I'd "bought", when I was still living in Australia (prior to the .au site). I was sent an email saying that my IP address was in Australia and that I'd need to provide proof of US residency before I could download it (eg drivers licence or similar). I had created a new amazon account for this specific purpose, using a relative's genuine US address, so it's not like they would have seen a change of address in my account. Unfortunately I didn't keep the email and I didn't bother to "buy" any more Kindle freebies until I moved to the US so I don't know if it would have happened again.

I know this thread is about people not living in the US purchasing ebooks at amazon.com, but has anyone in the in the US or Canada been able to purchase ebooks from amazon.co.uk?

But there are territorial restrictions on the titles I want to buy: not to be sold in US or Canada. I suspect that might complicate things.

Edit: I have done a bit of reading on this and it appears as if in theory it might be possible, but would would involve doing things that are deceptive like changing my IP address and temporarily registering my devices in the UK. And apparently if Amazon figured out what I was doing it could lead to real problems.

But it seems as if I might be able to buy ebooks from amazon.co.uk if I were physically present in the UK.

Kind of frustrating. Gollancz is involved in a project publishing Michael Moorcock's books in "definitive editions." Obviously buying hard copies is not a problem but some of the titles are available only as ebooks. Who knows if they will ever be available here.

I have an Amazon UK account. I did not change my IP Address. I used my American Express Card that has my US Address as the billable address. The only other thing I did was list a hotel as my physical address in the UK.

Think I'll try that. Thank you.

Was the hotel address the only address associated with your Amazon UK account or did you add it as another address? I'm asking because I have multiple addresses attached to my Amazon US account that are also attached to my UK account.

I tried to purchase a book from Amazon UK a few years ago and received the "Please contact customer service" message. I was told to call the UK which I couldn't as it would have revealed my current location. I was worried that Amazon would close my account if I disregarded the instructions so I never attempted it again.

Yes, I'm worried about my account being closed. When I login to Amazon UK with my usual name/password and go to an entry for an ebook there is no option to buy, just a notice that I can't purchase ebooks from Amazon UK. There is also an option to change my device settings if I have moved. Then I get sent to my manage devices page on Amazon US.

Setting up another account with a different credit card and a UK address might work, as Apache did (I guess) might work but I wonder if there is a rule against that.

Well, it's not as if I don't have anything else to read.

I have the same credit card for both my US and UK accounts. My UK account also has a US email address.

I do not have the account to save money on ebook purchases. I use the account to buy books that are not available in the US or are available earlier.
