As a general rule: If you get a device with a Li-Ion battery in it and the battery has zero charge, return it. If it has enough charge to turn on and run a few minutes, it should be OK. |

Hi,
The battery is good - I bought it from a well known supplier with good products. It had enough charge for Kobo Aura running with light for hours. I wanted to discharge the new battery quickly and see if it charges normally, because after we installed the new battery we tried charging it and there were some strange behaviour (strange % change). I wanted do discharge fully and see the charging process and it failed to charge as you know. - The Ahura HD is supplying about 4V if no battery is installed, so it is not that it delivers bad voltage. - But if a battery is installed the voltage starts dropping and in seconds is stopped. - The battery is new and has its IPC (I think they called it like this - - this is the protection of the battery) and moreover some more batteries were tried with the same result, so it is not the battery that causes problems. I think only two possibilities exists (but I might be wrong, please correct my thinking if so): 1) Maybe some chip on the reader that detects the charge of the battery has gone mad and think that it is charged and that is wh it stops the process 2) Some check for compatibility of the batteries is installed on the Aura HD (but the battery placed is also 3.7V 1500 mAh as the original battery?!) What do you think? |

I think it most likely that the charge controller chip that kobo likely employs is kaput or that there is some other problem in that circuit. It could be as simple as a bad trace, bad solder joint, etc. If you can't get Kobo to fix it, you might try a local HDTV or computer/tablet/cell phone repair shop, or try ascertaining which chip is a Li-ion charge controller by looking up the parts online. Now, if Kobo has the microcontroller doing the charging then you may have a firmware issue, but I think it rather unlikely... Alternatives include external charging of the battery, but that would doubtless be painful. OTOH, a small connector could possibly be added to the case for just that purpose and charging pereformed while connected to the reader as long as the reader doesn't interfere with the charger.
I'm pretty sure you'd need at least a three wire connection to the battery to have a data line that could be used to interrogate a battery chip to ensure a certain battery was employed. At least I can't think of a way to do it without getting highly overly elaborate, if it could be done at all unless you're going to employ a radio or the like for just that purpose. Too silly. By highly overly elaborate I meant super-imposing an AC waveform on the DC power leads or somesuch nonsense, or having an active switch(MOSFET?) to temporarily internally disconnect the power lead from the actual battery so it could be used as a data line, etc. Then you'd need a good sized cap or super cap to temporarily power the reader... How would such a data gathering process be triggered? blah, blah, blah highly overly elaborate. Two wire connection likely equals dumb battery. Good luck. |

Hi everybody,
I am writing to give final update ![]() Nothing worked, or at least it would be too hard. So I patiently waited and finally got a Kobo Aura HD with broken screen. Then combined the working screen and the working mainboard and that seems to have worked ![]() Once again thanks for your help and advice! |
