FYI to all -- I loaded a couple books to experiment. When I first searched for a nonsense word, "Text in Books" was black, and when I selected it, it told me 2 books still needed to be indexed. When I tried a couple minutes later, "Text in Books" was gray and unselectable. I assume that means the books finished indexing.

Yes, that's correct. "Text in books" is what, in earlier firmware versions, was called "All Items". The new search screen in 5.6.1 is a great improvement, to my mind.

I see it now as well! Like I said, I love the new search too. It was never about that. I just didn't know where "Items still indexing" moved to. They just created/renamed it to the "Text in Books" category. Mystery solved, thanks guys!

Yup. I started looking and found a confirming answer elsewhere after finding it here thanks to pssquirrel. I never use search on my 5.6.1 device - at least not yet - so at least I know what to do if something is stuck indexing.

Thanks! As I've only had a Kindle for a week or so, 5.6.1 is the only firmware I know

Speaking of newbieness -- is there a way to delete more than one book at a time? i.e., is there a way to check off multiple books then select delete? So far I've only figured out how to delete books one at a time by long-pressing a title/cover to bring up a little menu that offers a delete command. Thx!

Not from the Kindle itself, no, but you can delete the files directly from the USB-mounted drive.

PG, why do you think that the 5.6.1 search screen is "broken"? You didn't answer me when I asked you before. I think personally that it's a great improvement over what was there before. What has broken, in your view?

Or from calibre, which will allow you to remove them based on metadata searches rather than sometimes-obtuse filenames. e.g. all books by a certain author, Amazon delivers books with filenames based on their title+ASIN.

If you jailbreak over the serial port, you can install a terminal emulator and delete things with regular expressions, or based on folder membership.
