Why is it so hard?
I just figured that the hack to get rid of the margins is out of development. That's one bummer too much for me. Forced margins on a 6" display, seriously? That's too much idiocracy for me.
I thought I had found the perfect Sony replacement. I was willing to buy that frankenreader, JB it in order to give it a slight chance of keeping up with a Sony (headstart even, since Kindle is the only one to allow for buying several dictionaries and use them as such), and tear it down to make the frontlight less unhealthy and uncomfortable for night reading. It would have been the perfect ereader for me, though not out of the box... Can someone please build an ereader that's capable of replacing a 3,5yrs old Sony? Double the price for christ's sake, just DO it! Now I pray and hope that my PRS-T2 won't die until some manufacturer is up to the task. I'd like to read on something bigger, like the H2O, but not for the price of stacking several 1++kg worth of dictionaries around me to bugger about with them. It's a nightmare... Edited because NiLuJe proved me wrong. Left it here for consistency. Last edited by PRS-T2; 11-08-2014 at 06:46 PM. |

@PRS-T2: Err, what? kaznelson is dutifully maintaining his margins hack, both for the PW1 & the PW2, so we've been enjoying borderless reading for quite a while
![]() (And, of course, KOReader & CoolReader let you do whatever the hell you want with your margins, too ![]() |

Is it my imagination, something I'm doing wrong, or is KOReader unable to display library books, for whatever reason? I'm figuring the DRM. Thanks in advance. |

So it works for AZW3 in the standard reader but needs language set to EN? Does the FW handle dictionaries differently when system lang is set from, say German, to English? Alternative readers won't do the magic for me, because (if I didn't get that one wrong, too hehe) there is no way to get all the nice dictionaries working. Oxford, Pons etc. and the quick and easy jumping forth and back between book and wikipedia is what makes Kindle the only acceptable system for me after Sony in the first place ![]() Last edited by PRS-T2; 11-08-2014 at 05:47 PM. @PRS-T2: Yep, the UI language has no impact on dictionaries, those are based on the document's language (if set in the metadata, if not, there might be some logic that falls back to the default dictionary for the UI language instead. Switching dictionaries on the fly is fairly painless on the PW2 anyway

@PRS-T2: AZW3 is KF8
![]() As with the default settings, the scaling might be slightly different between the KF7 (MOBI) and KF8 (AZW3) reader, but it's usually for the better. The latest version handles the dictionaries popup better, too. EDIT: As a for instance, with the margins at the minimum. Last edited by NiLuJe; 11-08-2014 at 06:09 PM. |

I'm using the smallest & finer-grained preset of font sizes, FWIW (2_16-30).
That said, I'm also using heavily tweaked font settings when it comes to font sizes, since I'm using CFF OpenType fonts tailored for print, not screen, so I'm also playing with scaling on a per-font basis to smooth things over ![]() ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 11-08-2014 at 07:19 PM. |

@NiLuJe: That's brilliant!
@all: I'm in the game again, yeehaw! As for the frontlight hack: I'm currently looking for thin, heat resistant yellow-orange filter film that's available in Germany. I think film would be the best way to reduce the blue in the lighting, since it could be reverted, e.g. to change the intensity or the tone whereas painting would be permanent, can't be tested to figure out the right amount and would be hard to distribute evenly. All sorts of filter I tried so far with my led lights got bleached by the heat emitted by the LEDs, up to a degree of total color loss. No wonder, since they were meant for video and photo production and event lighting. They can take immense spotlight heat, but not for long. I'm also thinking of Kapton tape due to it heat resisting capabilities and amber color, but can't find a source here, only some chinese clone at Amazon. I don't know whether it is too dark or not. Any advice or silly idea are still highly welcome ![]() As soon as I find something that's worth a try, I will order a PW and take my time to make sure that it's ok, before I kill the warranty by tearing it down to try the hack. Whoever has any idea or suggestion how to do it or what to use, please drop it here or pm me, it would be highly welcome. I will try to make photos of what I do, just in case that my low blue light frankenreader turns out to be actually usable ^^ ![]() |
