So, removed the read only attribute and ran Calibre again.
This time it stored the alterations and when it was restarted, the layout was still correct.
This morning I ran Calibre again and still ok. Looks as if this may well have sorted my problem.

@ferretman - It's good to know that my earlier post in this thread solved your problem in this thread

But I'm buggered if I can understand why it did so

AFAIK the tweak_book_gui.json file is related to the book editor, whilst your problems in the library manager looked like they might be related to the gui.json file.

The two files serve a similar purpose, they contain the various settings and variable data relating to the user interface - the first for the book editor the second for the library manager.

Any insight you, or anyone else, can offer might be useful to Kovid and/or help cure my state of puzzlement :lol:

There is a problem with Calibre 2.1 keeping the layout. The fix will be in the next release.

If any of the files in your calibre configuration folder are read only (eg gui.json), then you need to track down what is causing that to happen. I suspect its something other than calibre - no idea what though.
