I just made one test column Reading Status. I am now going to try two, Percent Read and Last Read as suggested by davidfor. That is actually what I wanted in the first place.

Personally, I find the "Percent Read" and "Last Read Column" most useful. The former tells me how far through the book I am. When I reach 100%, I know the book is finished. The "Last Read Column" is the date when I was last reading the book. I like seeing that plus it is used buy the plugin when retrieving the positions to not retrieve an older position.
Thanks. I am now going to try that. By the way, do I need to fill in the dropdowns under Other Options? What are those used for?

Not really, but they are handy. If you have the button for the plugin on the toolbar, setting these options to one of the actions means pressing the button will do that option. That makes it easy to run that function.

OK I think I now have it. The columns seem to be working fine. I also figured out the Other Options. Thanks to all who have so patiently assisted me. I am sure there are going to be further questions as I delve into this very well done program Calibre.

Here's one more before I go! Do the reading changes only work when going from kobo to Calibre or also from Calibre to kobo? I am not sure but I changed the reading position as a test within Calibre and it did not change on the table but it works fine from kobo to Calibre.

Yes, but there is no automatic way to do it. The books need to already be on the device and processed into the devices database. When the device is connected, select the books in the calibre library and select the "Store/Restore current bookmark" from the plugins menu. The dialog gives options to either store the reading locations for the books, or restore them to the device. Choose the latter with the desired options.

Here's a post describing how I automate the creation of collections called "Reading", and "Finished_yyyy" to keep track of what I am reading, and what I have finished this year.
You did read this I hope....

Yes I did but I am not certain where you get the information. I am still learning the ins and outs of Calibre!

I've gained this info from being a long time Kobo user, from discussions with David for, from using caliber, from being inquisitive, from looking at the data in the Kobo database, ie from experience.

Pages and words come from another calibre plugin "Count Pages"
