You could take a VM on a disk/thumb drive which contained an authorised copy of ADE.

Then the copy of ADE would not notice it was being run on different machines, as it would be insulated inside the virtual machine.

@Harry, Yes it seems I should start saving up for one, though I think it will cost more than the reader its going to support.

I was just trying to understand the limitations that adobe is imposing on us.

I just couldn't/still can't see why getting a book should be any more difficult than getting email.

Ah, my apologies. Laptops are so universal these days, I wrongly assumed that you would already have one.

Is there any problem with de-authorizing (<alt><shift>d) the computer re-authorizing the computer with your adobe ID, downloading the book and transferring it to your reader and then de-authorizing the computer again?
Just to be sure that you're asking the "right" question this time (and please correct me if I'm wrong).

Is this really what you want to know? Or - judging from the other thread - isn't it: I have a Kobo Glo, I am new to this ebook thing. Please could you help me to buy books directly on my Kobo without the indirection of using a PC?

If this is the case then I guess that asking in the Kobo subforum will give you the right instructions in less than an hour. I don't think that all the generalisations will bring you nearer to an helpful answer.

He explained it more than one old post (of course things could have changed over the past couple years).
This certainly describes my experience. I've registered a lot more than six + six machines/devices to the same account over the years, and I've never had to call Adobe to free any up in that time.

To the OP:
Mantano can read Adobe's DRM (if you register it with your AdobeID). It can also fulfill ACSM files. So at least on Android devices, I know you can use a browser to download previously purchased Adobe epubs from your various online libraries and read them with Mantano. You can also purchase from a retailer, download the ASCM file and "open" it with Mantano to fulfill/download the epub. Or for that matter, any of the other iOS/Android apps that let you buy/read/download books.

As for downloading DRMed content onto public access machines, that seems like very, very fringe usage to me. The assumption is that those who have DRMed content to read have 1) taken it with them, or 2) have a device/app to read it on which is capable of connecting to the store which has copies of your DRMed purchases (if you didn't take them with you)

Why not save up for a portable device that will allow you to download ADE epubs from anywhere, such as a Sony or a ph/tablet (with your choice of reading app)? You'll reach that target much sooner than for a fully fledged laptop and it will much easier to lug around.

Also, it's less an Adobe limitation than a Kobo limitation. Sony devices have the ability to download from multiple sources so there's no technical impediment. I don't know why Kobos can't do it.

Regarding the availability of ebooks vs email, I can remember the days before wifi, and when webmail (apart from the dreaded hotmail) wasn't ubiquitous. I certainly wasn't able to check my work email when away from my work computer. It wasn't that long ago. At least it doesn't _feel_ like that long ago to me.
