1G is nothing for Windows these days

I have 2G on XP (3 is max). the sweet spot is a little over 1G
On W7, 2G will get you a poor performance score. I have 3G and it can get boggy.

@psychobunni - did you try running calibre with no browsers running. Running a browser with active flash pages and calibre concurrently on a 1G box is sailing close to the wind.

Also try running in safe mode see Calibre constantly crashing - help? - just to see if it stops crashing. It may not be flash.

If you can't add more memory to the computer, you could switch to using linux. Or go back to XP, as its numbers dwindle it becomes less attractive as a malware target.

I agree as far as the crashing goes -- for Win7, being limited to 1GB of RAM is pretty much asking to crash. It is almost certainly just a regular old too-many-programs-at-once out-of-memory crash.

Regarding calibre installed/portable, the question is where do you plan on using the library? calibre can handle a library on an external drive just fine, and the real benefit of Portable is if you will switch computers.

If you switch between two or more computers, the portable version will allow the program itself to travel with the library -- including the appdata, like library location, what plugins you have installed, etc. Also, you can update Portable once, rather than updating on two computers.

Worth noting also, is that if you want to use 64-bit calibre, you need to use the installed version, as Portable is only 32-bit.

I had to junk a laptop that has 1.5GB memory because it was so slow. Doing almost anything was painful.

It is hard to imagine running acceptably with less than 4gb. The new laptop I got has 8, and our desktop machines have 12.

It is probably possible to add memory to your computer, which would be much less expensive that replacing the machine. For one of ours I ended up needed to replace all the memory because of some constraints involving mixing memory bars, but even that cost less than 1/4 a new machine.

The problem is most likely a cashing issue due to only having 1gig of ram. That will slow down the computer big time. If you have a 32-bit Windows, get 4gig of ram and if you have a 64-bit Windows, get at least 8gig of ram.
