As much as I miss the page turn buttons of my Kindle 3 (Kindle Keyboard; I got mine when it wasn't yet officially called that), I find the touchscreen of the Paperwhite a lot more comfortable to use for every other purpose than page turning - especially the on-screen keyboard, compared to the small and hard physical buttons of the Kindle 3.
I haven't tried the Basic Kindle, but I'd assume the touchscreen on-screen keyboard of the Paperwhite is, for most people, much more convenient and faster to use than navigating the on-screen keyboard of the Basic Kindle (I'm guessing the basic Kindle is targeted at people who need the keyboard only minimally). I do have rather narrow fingers though, so the Paperwhite's on-screen keyboard presents no problems for me. And things like choosing/opening a book or looking up words in the dictionary are much faster and more comfortable than they were on the Kindle 3. |

Having upgraded from the Kindle Keyboard to Paperwhite, 'm in full agreement with Yapyap. As much as I liked the page turn buttons, everything else about the Paperwhite is better, so the lack of page turn buttons is only a very minor issue.

The page turning button is the Square box...IF I am correct. Have you tried using it sideways? Then you can hit the button either with the left of right thumb whatever your use to on the K3.
Also to give your hands a break try rubbing the inside area of the elbow til you find the nerve that controls the thumb & 1st finger Rub til the pain lets up then firmly hold the thumb pull & give a quick tug! Repeat as needed! |

A touch screen is far from a "gimmick" - it's a much better user interface than buttons. As people have said, it requires no pressure, has no moving parts to break, and the "soft" keyboard on screen is actually a lot quicker to type on than the rubber keys of the Kindle Keyboard. It really is much better in every way.

On an e-reader, I tend to agree. However, that cannot be said for all cases. There are lots of devices that are served much better by buttons, especially if one needs to have a lot of different functionalities available instantly, and be able to use it without actually looking what you're doing.
