I bought my (then) seven year old son a Kindle Fire HD last May. I also bought an Otterbox case to help prolong its life.
He loves playing Minecraft on it, but he also loves reading on it. His video game time is restricted to a couple hours on the weekends, but he can read whenever he wants (obviously). He reads every night when he goes to bed, and on weekend nights the rule is that he's allowed to read as long as he wants. He'll usually read for a couple hours each weekend night. I was nervous about buying it for him, but haven't regretted it all. He's a gadget geek (just like me), and I know the Kindle has made reading a little more enticing to him. That's priceless, to me. I don't care how he reads, as long as he gets in the habit early. |

Nice to see parents are supporting their children's reading. We usually give them 0.5-1 hour before bed time to read a book and sometimes I take a peak inside their room and just love to watch them read.

Both of my children had ebook readers starting in elementary school. My daughter's has lasted since she got it (right after the introduction of the K3 w/ special offers, so almost four years) and my son's is a hand-me-down K3 from when I got my Paperwhite right after they were released, so about 1.25 years. They carry them to school and have yet to break one.
That said, they both seem to prefer paper and still read paper books more than ebooks. My son seems to like reading on his iPod using Marvin more than on the Kindle. |

My four-year-old daughter has her own NOOK HD. AS far as I can tell, she doesn't really make a distinction between ebook and paper book and asks me to read to her from each with about the same frequency.

Last time I looked, the e-book selection in Dutch was deplorable, and there were very few books suited for young children; the ones that could be had were often over the top expensive. In the Netherlands, at this point in time, it would be quite useless to give a child his/her/(its?) own reader, at least IMHO. It's even useless for many adults who only read Dutch, because there are so few e-books to choose from compared to paper books ![]() Last edited by Katsunami; 02-26-2014 at 05:42 PM. |

My daughter (22 years old) has a first generation Kindle Paperwhite. My son (13 years old) will occasionally use my old Kindle 2.

Update: Last night my older daughter came to me and asked if she could go to be earlier since she want to go read with the Cybook. Then she said how much she loves reading from it in the bed

My 23 year old daughter replaced her old PRS-300 I purchased her with a Kobo touch last Christmas. She is a voracious reader and the kobo never leaves her side.

My 11yo has my old Kobo Touch. He tends to have a preference for paper, but will happily read from either if that's how the book he wants to read comes. He is jonesing after my Glo to read in bed at night, which gives me Aura upgrade fever... but I think I'll wait to see what comes out next.

Kids wanting your reader makes good excuse for upgrading your reader for a better one, doesn't it?

I don't have children yet, but if I did they would be encouraged to read via any format I.e physical and ebooks. I wouldn't give them a tablet as I would want them to read and not be distracted by other things.
